When someone says fashion, you probably think of Paris, Milan, London or New York. These capitals of style run thick with the fabrics of Lagerfeld, Gautier, Armani and Valentino, thriving in a hub of cosmopolitanism and class.
But now it’s time for those fashion capitals to move aside. There’s a new girl in town and she’s pitching design in the inimitable style of her hometown – Essex.
That’s right – while you might associate the city with fake nails and even faker tan, TOWIE star Sam Faiers has been injecting high class into her designs with fashion label Very.
Discussing all things stylish in a Sam Faiers Q&A with Very, the reality star and former glamour model said, “I wanted my collection to be really fun and flirty and for there to be pieces to suit all ages.
“There is a touch of Essex style with the sequins and high-shine fabrics but there’s also a sophisticated edge with a gorgeous white jumpsuit and tailored black trousers.”
Indeed, the fashionistas you see in the TOWIE universe are the clear inspiration for her work. Brash yet edgy designs are the name of the game, with sequined glamour and svelte figures dominating this fascinating collection.
And clothing isn’t Faiers’ only interest: “I’m just about to launch my eyelashes – which is another really exciting project! I am a big fan of MAC and Charlotte Tilbury cosmetics. I swear by Tom Ford’s contour cream as it’s a highlighter as well as bronzer. I also love to use the shimmering body lotion from my La Bella gift set.”
Who’d have thought a reality star could be oozing with such style?
Yet Faiers doesn’t take all the credit. Just like the best designers, she cites collaboration as her main source of success: “I’m working with a really great stylist who is pushing me to try new, edgier looks and I’m really enjoying it.”
Her latest Very collection shows how perfectly the collaboration has paid off. Rich in floral patterns and dark, moody colours, it’s perfect for sprucing up the darkened doldrums of the season. As those work nights out and end of year blow-outs come calling, Faiers’ clothing is on exactly the right side of classy.
The Essex look has been creeping into popular culture for a long time, but there’s seldom been a point where you could create the look with true authenticity.
So the next time you’re dreaming of Paris or Milan, just remember that truly high-end fashion is nearer than you think.
