Just days ago, DICE released a huge Battlefield 3 PC patch weighing in at 450MB, fixing a whole slew of issues (you can find a fill list of release notes here). However, some of the promised fixes didn’t make it into the patch.
For instance, the tactical flashlights did not get fixed as previously promised, and neither did the change/nerf to the IRNV infrared sight. But fear not, those changes will be made in the upcoming patch DICE is currently working on.
Here’s a list of confirmed items/changes that will be addressed in an upcoming Battlefield 3 patch, as posted on Battlelog:
- In-game VOIP addition
- Tactical light nerf
- Chat window changes (size, positioning)
- New squad changes (ability to make squads)
These are just some of the issues that are being worked on, and, according to DICE, they are well aware of the huge demand for Battlerecorder in Battlefield 3.

Battlefield games on PC have always had a strong dedicated server support, where anyone could rent and operate their own server. And much like the Battlefield games before it, Battlefield 3 will support both ranked and unranked servers, as DICE’s Mikael Kalms notes in a recent EA forum post. If you’re interested in renting your own BF3 server, here are a few bits of info, according to Kalms:
- There will be both ranked and unranked servers
- Ranked servers offer some freedom to server owners/admins to set the map, game type etc. Ranked servers will track player progression EAs master servers, much like in past Battlefield games.
- Unranked servers give the server owner/admin more freedom to select which weapons are available to players etc. The unranked server option is suited for tournaments because everyone has a level playing field (no ranks/unlocks). You cannot rank up or unlock new weapons on unranked servers.
- Ranked servers will be provided by select Ranked Server Providers (RSPs). The official list has yet to be released.
- Pricing is likely to be higher than Bad Company 2 server due to Battlefield 3 requiring “considerable more CPU power per player than Bad Company 2″.
- PunkBuster will be the anti-cheat system for Battlefield 3.
- Third party anti-cheat organizations like PBBans will be available, it’s up to the server owner if he wants to use them.
- Players won’t be able to create their own servers running on their own machines.
- No news yet on Battlerecorder or spectator mode.
One of the big requests from gamers for Battlefield 3 is the return of BattleRecorder, which was featured in Battlefield 2. BattleRecorder makes it easy to record and play back gameplay, making it ideal for those looking to make videos and Machinima content. It’s been uncertain whether we’d see BattleRecorder in Battlefield 3, but there has been some development on that front.
In a recent interview with PixelEnemy, EA’s Battlefield Brand Manager Kevin O’Leary let it slip that BattleRecorder would not be returning to Battlefield 3. This stirred a lot of tension in the community, but then DICE community manager Daniel Matros tweeted that this was not the case — the lack of BattleRecorder was dismissed by Matros. Where does that leave us? Where we pretty much began: BattleRecorder isn’t confirmed, but isn’t denied either. Seeing as how quickly DICE was to correct O’Leary’s statement, and considering how much gamers want BattleRecorder, it’s easy to assume that we’ll see some form of recording capability in Battlefield 3.
DICE had previously mentioned that they had been using BattleRecorder internally to create the videos and trailers we’ve seen of Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3. BattleRecorder was a popular feature in BF2 and contributed to a lot of videos, Machinima and other content. With the popularity of YouTube and gaming channels today, BattleRecorder in BF3 would be more than welcome.
