Battlefield 3 features over two dozen vehicles, ranging from tanks, to APCs, to jets and helicopters. On top of that, there are a number vehicle unlocks. Each vehicle has its own set of unlocks.
Battlefield 3 tank unlocks

IR Smoke
The first unlock for the tank group is IR Smoke, which, when deployed, casts smoke around the vehicle, preventing it from being seen, spotted or targeted.
Secondary LMG
A light machine gun mounted co-axially to the main gun, and provides a secondary fire to the tank operator.
Autoloader
The autoloader increases the speed of reloading the main cannon.
3X Zoom
An improved optics set with the option to switch to 3X zoom for engaging targets at long range.
Maintenance (regen)
The maintenance unlock improves the tank’s ability and speed of which it regenerates its armor.
Secondary HMG
A secondary heavy machine gun mounted co-axially to the main cannon. The HMG is well suited against infantry and smaller vehicles as well.
Proximity scan
Scans the area around you for enemies and displays them on your mini map.
Guided shell
A shell which can lock on enemy vehicles and track them. The shell can also lock on vehicles designated with the laser designator from teammates.
Thermal optics
A separate set of optics with thermal vision which can better point out enemies.
Thermal camouflage
Makes your tank harder to spot for enemies, increases the time it takes to lock on your tank as well, and decreases the time your tank is spotted by enemies.
Canister shell
A large, shotgun-like shell that fires thousands of small pellets, which is very useful against infantry.
Reactive armor
Upgraded armor which can sustain much more damage.
Battlefield 3 Jet unlocks

Stealth
Increases the time it takes for enemies to lock on you, and decreases the time you are spotted by the enemies.
IR Flares
Infrared flares that distract incoming anti-air missiles.
Heat seeking air-to-air missiles
Air to air missiles against enemy jets and helicopters.
Belt speed loading
Decreases the time it takes to reload your main machine gun.
Proximity scan
A continuous scan outside of your aircraft that detects enemy jets and helicopters.
Radar
Extends the range of the jet radar to see enemy and friendly aircraft for longer distances.
Extinguisher
Helps extinguish fires and can bring back a disabled jet back to operating levels.
Maintenance
Improves the time it takes for your jet to regenerate its shields.
Laser guided missile
An air-to-ground laser guided missile which can lock on ground vehicles.
Beam scanning
An upgraded missile radar which speeds up the time it takes to lock on enemy aircraft.
ECM radio jammer
A chaff launcher which makes it difficult for enemies to lock on your aircraft.

Stealth
Increases the time it takes enemies to lock on your helicopter, and decreases the time you are spotted by enemies.

Main cannon autoloader
Decreases the time it takes your main cannon to load.

A proximity radar that reveals enemy units around your helicopter.
Air radar
Increases the range of your air radar to reveal and track enemy aircraft over longer distances.
Guided missile
Guided missiles for the helicopter gunner which can lock on enemy land vehicles.
Extinguisher
Extinguishes fires and helps a disabled helicopter to get back to operational levels.
Maintenance
Improves a helicopter’s shield regeneration.
Thermal optics
A set of thermal optics for the gunner to easily spot and track enemy infantry and vehicles.
Laser painter
A secondary fire mode which targets enemies with a laser designator.
ECM jammer
A radar jammer which makes it harder for enemies to lock on your helicopter.
Guided rockets
Increases the accuracy and range of the main helicopter rockets.
TV missile
A gunner-operated TV guided missile.

Decreases the time it takes for the APC to heal/regenerate.
Armor piercing shell
Armor piercing shell which deals more damage on direct hits, but doesn’t explode or deal any splash damage.
Thermal camo
Makes it harder for enemies to spot and lock on your APC.
Guided missile
Guided anti-tank missiles which can lock on enemy tanks designated with a laser.
Reactive armor
Improves overall armor of the APC, making it stronger and less penetrable.

Why would someone choose the Secondary LMG over the Secondary HMG?
You unlock the LMG first so I guess it is an option in the time period before you unlock the other
From what I’ve heard, the LMG is more suited for CQB, whilst the HLMG is more suited for longer ranges, vehicles, etc.. Also, the LMG has a faster rate of fire than the HLMG.

mate, all machine guns were made for was putting brass onto the target to make the enemy think “HOLY SHIT!!!” it dont really matter what you have! could be a GPMG or a 50CAL for all the army cares!!!!! i think what they did was make the LMG for a higher fire rate, and a harder punch for the HMG! have fun XD
I hate to point this out but i cant let it go. Brass hits the floor, not the tgt. brass is the main componet of the case of the round. copper and lead hit the tgt. peace.
You are correct the LMG with its higher rate of fire is better for CQB whereas the HMG can engage targets at greater distance with less shell drop and more damage. As of right now the HMG never overheats and never needs to be reloaded. You can ‘bang’ away at targets all day!

I unlocked the HMG in the Beta and it was actually the worst gun sight ive ever seen in a game. The magazine compartment blocked about 1/3 of the screen, im hoping they update that for retail, because the beta version was really bad. I dont remember firing it at an enemy so i can’t speak about its damage potential.
I did fire it though. It had a slowish rate of fire, and the shell/bullets seemed to function like a shotgun, ie. lots of little pellets that spread out the farther they flew.

If you blow up a nuclear bomb in Battlefield 3, chances are if your playing hardcore mode, you could not escape the shockwave that travels through the air and burnes the atmosphere, making it hard to fly. Then after that, a secondary shockwave comes and destroys you like paper. If you are directly above the explosion, your plane will be split in half and desintegrated before the secondary shockwave comes(like a second or two later).

I would like to point out that Nukes have been dropped from much less than a jet bomber/fighter. i.e WWII. Im pretty sure an f-18 could handle it.
You are correct…there are Gravity Bombs (Nukes with no engines) that are designed to be carried by a Fighter/Bomber. There are even nuclear SAMs, fielded mostly by the Soviets.
They were released at much higher altitudes then bf3

I usually can’t stand the guys who wait for choppers in BC2 but I am so camping out for a jet on day 1. I wonder how hard it will be to unlock things for those jets.
Yea lol i did the same in the beta. I hope they make flairs standard, or at least the first unlock. Engi’s get the stinger as their first unlock so i feel jets should at least have it as their first.
You learn how to deal with stingers eventually, but man, it can be hard with so many of them being fielded. Not to mention the enemy jets with their AA missiles.

Yeah, as the Soviets/Russians found out the hard way in Afghanistan and Chechnya, Stingers are the great equalizer of infantry with air support, especially if multiple people fire at once. I’ll be having fun using Stingers and dodging them once I beat the campaign and co-op to kind of get a feel for the basic gameplay mechanics of the final version of the game. Plus, those 6 weapons that get unlocked in co-op. But I digress. I’m also hoping helicopters will be more powerful but less “invincible” like they were in BC2…
If you have played the beta, the jet upgrades are very hard to unlock because the machine gun is only really effective at taking down helicopters.

smoke was useful in badcompany because it worked as flaires also so missiles couldnt lock on. In this game will smoke be useless now that there are flares.
Flares are only available for Airborne vehicles. Smoke is for ground vehicles.

Ya u dont need flairs to dodge stingers. Try to get out of range before he locks on. Use distance, terrain or height to achieve this. Stingers usually come from the enemy base so fly away from it and go high up if youre already at a good height or low to the ground.
AA rockets from jets are harder, but if he locks u with those, he coulda killed ya with the MG too. So gotta be better at evasive.
