Battlefield 3 SOFLAM
The SOFLAM in Battlefield 3 is a laser designator used to mark enemy targets such as enemy tanks and other vehicles. The SOFLAM is unlocked and used by the Recon class in Battlefield 3. When a target has been painted, other classes such as the Engineer can lock and fire a Javelin missile towards it.

Wes, people play Call of Duty because they like tasteless, boring, repetitive games. They do not play Call of Duty because the “nerfed” a gadget on battlefield 3. If this was the only reason you played bf2, you’re an idiot.

Mhmm And i suppose that engineer’s Javelin missile is just going to weave through the buildings by itself? Without this^ its like a point and shoot rpg…only way to get a Javelin to go into top attack mode(which means it goes OVER the buildings thus removing the need for the engineer to have LoS of the vehicle) is to have a recon lock onto it with the SOFLAM. So really its more tightly weaved classes. It just goes to show…you should build balanced squads that build off each other’s abilities.

As for other abilities I like to make helicopter pilots paranoid by locking onto them with this. Watching them duck and dodge between buildings..up and down firing flares…is most satisfying! It also is a nice way of distracting people and pointing out a tank or something to the entire team even if your not there to see it yourself!

I do agree with Engineer being the only way to go.. It’s so stupidly powerful.

          1) While every other class has to run from tanks and be hidden at all times from their view, Engineers have rockets to kill them with ease

          2) Oh wait, Engineers can also make tanks extremely powerful and counter their counter.

          3) Rockets can one-shot in a splash, and kill through walls whenever desired, making them superior in infantry combat too

          4) You get ridiculous amounts of rockets with the explosives specialization. Ridiculous amounts.

          5) There will be vehicles to confront nearly everywhere, guaranteed, making BF3 very vehicle-focused. Unless you play in IO.

          6) Even in IO, rockets are superior vs infantry.

          7) If all else fails, Engineer rifles are almost as good as Assault’s.

          8) Now laser designators require engineers too.

And LOLL! at people buying CoD because BF classes are unbalanced. People buy it because it’s mainstream for the kiddies.

You’re obviously not thinking outside the box, Snipers use this tool in order to let jets know, and helicopters know, in which they used the Laser Guided Missles to shoot vehicles without having to be physically locked on themselves, Jets upset all of your theories, as for Snipers they can easily shoot a clueless engineer in which is looking for a place to extract his rocket launcher into someone’s face.

call of duty is for old arcade shooting en the new modern warfare 3 maps are very screwed you get shot in the back by campers always plus you want to talk about unbalance classes in bf3 I destroy tanks with the support class all the time just place 3 c4 and you are good to go plus the support guns are really good and powerful you just have to know how to shoot, whileon modern warfare 3 some clases and guns are just not worth it plus in here in bf3 you get way more guns than in mw3 plus the vehicles you get more strategy with choice of going a little arcade every once in a whilewith squad deathmatch. plus there are no campers in bf3 unles they want a pile of rubble falling on top of them, you know im rigth(oh yeah and in bf3 there is recoil and destruccion in real life that happens too not to mention the feeling of being supressed by fire wake up call for mw3 and there players).

Mines, Smaws, C-4 and claymores are all real life military engineer things, but I don’t get butt hurt about a thing, its a great game. I take out just as many tanks with C-4 and the support class as I do with projectiles and mines with the Engineer class. Also Rog3r you gotta give recon some love, as long as we are doing something. I play recon mostly and I get mad at others that do jack. At the very least they need to fly the MAV and spot some enemies or take out alot of the attackers (Cough)1 MVP 37-5 as a Sniper (Cough). And that was doing my “lone wolf” as you all say thing. Also due to the Sniper on your team, you probably won’t get shot. And its a game don’t hate because some people like one class more than the other, hate them cause they are noobs who don’t know how to use that class well. Damn I am a chatter bot. Point being Recon is as useful as the other classes if played properly, they reach out and touch someone, or they basically get you to breach the objective easier, the spot tons of shit with the MAV. CQ (Close Quarters), Scouting or even Long distance Marksmanship. This class is as much a beast as the rest of them.

Ok so I assume that this has replaced the tracer dart then? This dart was available to all classes in BC2. But carrying it as a medic, assault or sniper didn’t help to much because you didn’t then have a way to target the vehicle. Unless of course your teammates weren’t a bunch of lone wolf noobs!! I feel this should go to both recon and support. support can throw a claymore to cover his back while aiming this. Just my opinion..

Yah but lets be realistic here people with recon (BF3 Comes out on 27th for me, Australia)
How many of you guys actually will use this gadget and use it successfully? ummm about 3% of you?
The reason why i hate Recon and most other people do is because people say “Yah but Recon spot and provide covering firing far away” to me thats propaganda in terms of video games, Im taking this source from BFBC2 All snipers in that game:
    Dont spot
Cant kill or hit a target more than 200 metres away
Dont support so called “Covering fire”
I think DICE put the recon in the game so people will buy the game just because of SNIPER RIFLES!!!!
The only good Sniper/Recon to me is an aggressive one and one that plants radio beacons so team mates can spawn on them
Other then that there Just Useless And a waste to your team!!!

lol, people always say snipers never do anything , yet they hate them because they are constantly killed by one O.o , not all snipers are lone wolf, though like you say there are a lot that are and dont use them right, im the type that actually supports my team, i play both agressive and actual recon, its why its called recon and not sniper, 90% of a recons job is surveilence, the new MAV is awsome, a good sniper doesnt throw his position away by sniping everything that moves, but sticks to high value targets, such as enemy snipers so you dont get picked off

That’s not true, I play conquest and I camp 2 flags at once and I get the most kills and a lot of spots. I realize there might not be as many recons like me, but saying their a waste of a class is quite mean because it’s my favorite class to play. If you get good enough to use the recon class, then its not a waste, and I consider it to be a little op because 1 shot their dead (headshot) or 1 shot and their weak as fuck and usually get popped by one of my squad members or team mates. People who use full auto guns in my opinion are just bait for me to use to get other snipers/players to stick their heads out. If you ever decide to use the recon class, then just follow one of your team mates from far back and they’ll usually run into an enemy you can then take out, thus either saving your team mate, or just getting a kill in general. HEHE the only reason I typed this much is because I love typing in general, and love debating. Have a nice day, and if you even wanna play with a recon like me, then you can add me, I have no friends and enjoy playing with other people. Maybe me and you can have an orgy while we’re camping on the side of the map doing nothing with our snipers ;D < that may sound pathetic, but idc ;P BAIII

I’m new to Battlefield and still struggling with the controls, but to be helpful and not just dying all the time and making my team lose points for nothing, I chose the Recon, I keep spotting enemies by the tons and I can see how my team quickly points them out and shoot them down. Plus I use the radio beacon and motion sensor when I find a strategic place so my team can quickly dispatch near the action safely. So Recon is a crucial class if the player has the war tactic, and to that point any class is a shit if you just play it like the old duck shooting game. Not everyone enjoys running around shooting bullets, war is a tactic art, a team should find the benefits out of Recon and all other classes through communication. If the Recon guy up the hill is useless make sure you tell him and teach him how to use that class instead of cursing the class itself. Have fun, its a game!

Finding a nest to set up in with out having to worry about someone slitting my throat cause my supposed team mates are watching my back is difficult. Fact 2: the SOFLAM is the greatest waste of time ever! I’ve used it and it seems fair enough but how many engineers do you see sitting in the back of the battlefield who are capable not to mention willing to stand by for a mortar strike! Seriously bring back BF/BC 2, at least it livened in up and even us recon guys couldn’t nest up in fear our enemies would rain hell on our heads.

    Definition of a Sniper / Recon;
To provide eye on tactical advice and Intel, Effective fire whether suppressing or taking out targets an enemy not willing to leave a location due to the fear of being taken out will leave him / her vulnerable to flanking attacks or effective mortar fire. Players that don’t do the above while playing as the Recon class belong on COD. Battlefield = Simulation Combat Team work is a must! COD = Finding the noobiest, overpowered weapon with quick scoping, law of physics defying ability!
To think that the Recon class is no effective because people don’t mark targets or provide suppressive fire is retarded as I have seen Medics not reviving or healing fellow team members, Engineers that will use the AT weapons on Infantry while a nearby tank slaughter you force and Support classes that don’t support at all.
As for the SOFLAM its awesome, I Mark the targets and my team finish them, in most cases just being Marked will lead people to leave or eject from the Tanks and Aircraft and if thats not effective then I don’t Know what is!? It also allows mortar teams to see where targets are and track them constantly.. BOOM=]

Not sure if ya’ll know this or not; but you can spot enemies with the SOFLAM. I don’t mean designate vehicles; i mean ACTUALLY spot enemies. You put it down at the top of the rocks. You move down lower on the rocks behind cver. You use the remote control to control the SOFLAM and spot enemies. You crawl up the rock and snipe the shit outta the marked enemies. It’s great for when you’re getting sniped at. You can use the SOFLAM to find a target without having to leave cover. I prefer to use it over the MAV or the near pointless T-UGS.

I can change your mind quickly.

    setup: recon, shotgun, mav

1: run close to outpost (but not too close) and set up mobile spawn point

2: deploy mav and spot enemies, set mav down indiscreetly for motion sensor

3: attack base, beginning with static targets, then the runners.

I’ll agree, however, that maybe MAV and SOFLAM could have been combined.

the recons soflam has an automatic tracking system. place it in a high traffic area and targets will be lit and as a recon you can be far off waiting for infantry to spot and heads to pop over protective cover. hell of a tool

I’m needing step by step instructions on how to exactly USE the SOFLAM effectively please…
Here’s what happened to me… Scenario:
    Conquest / Operation Firestorm.
Blasted off from start in jeep and left it hidden behind hill overlooking the 3 objectives.
Jumped out, went prone & crawled to top of hill.
Activated SOFLAM by pressing Left Arrow key.
Planted it (eventually) by hitting R1.
Slinked off to hide somewhere while I remote controlled it.

For starters, the range appears to be quite limited. I had jets locked (for a few seconds) but they would not STAY locked (nothing would for any extended time, unless I aimed the SOFLAM directly at it).

Other team members (especially those flying jets) seemed to be oblivious to the fact that I had painted a target for them. Too busy trying to fly I suppose.

I spent approx 4 hours painting targets, for a total of just 3 kills.

I’ll stick with this for a while longer, but so far, it’s been nothing but frustrating, hearing that lock beep, and no-one does anything with it. :-(

Does anyone have any clues as to what I can do to improve the hit rate please ?

The only thought I had was to race back to base, and grab a tank equipped with laser guided bombs, and use that, but I need to ‘earn’ that class first :-(

    Thanks, Greg (The-Perp)

I do not have the game skills for running around the map killing everyone. I tend to run into little pebbles that stop my player. Forcing me to jump or climb over. Which leads to my death. K/D ratio 1/14 on average. So sniping allows me to play the game at my level. K/D ratio 7/1. However, it has its price, “Is there anyone out there who doesn’t already have my dog tags?” With the SOFLAM I can continue to spot the enemy (for the squad) and target enemy vehicles (for the team) even when I am out of ammunition. I don’t score a lot of points but I feel like I can make a contribution. God I hate it when they take my dog tags!!!

i play as recon and i have to say javelin is much more powerful then stingers, it take a stingers 2 hit to kill a helicopter and a javelin one hit.

Soflam allow the javelin user to take out the tank in two hit,it is great when there is a tanks and someone who repair it behind it.

There is vehicles that have guides missile and soflam allow then to use it with out waiting for the lock.

there is one thing that make a soflam good to use and it the team if your playing with some lone-wolf noobs don’t use it.

I will not comment on Recon, because those of us who play and team with them know of the benefits: mobile spawn points, enemy detection, suppression fire.

Soflam: Seems to have a shorter range than expected and yes it is fun to harrass aircraft. But I believe this becomes a powerful tool for the team when your team mates get guided missiles for their tanks and aircraft. It provides over the horizon firing. This is basically taking the Mortar fire in BF2/BC2 and splitting it between the team. Your aircraft now have lockable targets to fire and forget at. Could be very nasty, espcially coordinated with tanks and air.
