Battlefield 3 Mortar
The Mortar in Battlefield 3 is a deployable 60mm mortar that is unlocked and used by the Support class. The mortar can be used with both high explosive shells, and smoke grenade shells as well. The mortar in Battlefield 3 works with the player first deploying it, where after the mini map expands and the player can select a target. The Mortar can be equipped instead of the Claymore.

It sucks that you have to give up the Ammo Box to get this though!
I guess for balancing purposes, a constant stream of resupplied mortars would be so annoying.

The blast radius is small. So you have to be almost dead on to kill someone. Also, does anyone have any information on how to change from explosive rounds to smoke?

Infinite shells = Overpowered. You know when someone can go 20-0 and MVP by using one gadget, things have gotten out of hand. Think of the poor MCOM station?!
P.S. admin dude, its not four shells, it’s infinite aka –/–

Not overpowered at all. First off, if you see a guy using a mortar, equip yours the next respawn. Every time you shoot you show up on the map, and you are stationary. It only takes one shell to kill an enemy mortar (I think destroying his mortar results in an explosion that finishes him off as well.

I’ve been using it a lot lately to try and soften up a large group of the enemy who is blocking a path, and there are times where I might get a kill, times where I might even get a double kill, but the majority of the time it is only wounding them at most.

I say when firing at a group in an alley kind of area, 1 out of 4 shells will result in a kill assist, and usually something around 20 points. Only time I took out a lot of guys with it was when we destroyed both objectives and my team was moving up. I laid waste to the campers shooting them in the back.

It’s not really something that’s overpowered. For it to work you basicly take one guy out of the fight to operate it, and even then you need people to spot for the person shooting, on top of that the blast radius is small and if the enemy moves away during those crucial seconds it takes for the grenade to travel all you do is shoot at dirt. Laying down a smoke-screen with it however should be quite effective.

I believe the Mortar is probably one of the most overpowered gadgets in the game. This is just my opinion so feel free to share yours. I can’t think of way the mortars would be even considered balanced if you can just refill at an ammo box. This means, if you have team that’s smart enough to spot, then you have yourself a steady stream of kills. One of my friends was blown up from inside our spawn area all the way from the enemy’s spawn thanks to a mortar. Raining on the spawn isn’t considered unbalanced? The weapon should not be able to refill. I saw one player sit in the same exact spot for an entire game of Rush with his Mortar. His ending score? 23-0; highest KDR in the server of 32 people and top of his team. I’d suggest giving the Mortar no refills, and about 7-10 shells max to make it balanced. Having the ability to drop a shell anywhere on the map is good enough, but having an infinite amount of shells is just ridiculous

No the it doesn’t have that far a range. You are massively exagerating its ability. You can not reach spawn to spawn at all! In fact its range is not that great at all. You need to be in the open as well so as soon as you kill someone with it they know where you are and can easily sneak up and kill you as you can’t keep a look out. Also the radius of explosions is tiny, you can heal up again before the next one comes in. I just played a game today and stayed 5m away from where the morters were landing and I got one of my highest kill streaks ever. It was annoying but didn’t stop me at all, just wounded me a few times, the guy wasted the entire game and got about 5 kills. A guy using this all game is a waste, a player will kill loads more playing normally, it just isnt powerful enough and leaves the player too vulnerable. If coordinated well it can be very nasty, but if you are getting killed by it and are too dumb to sneak up and kill the guy when you can see exactly where they are once they kill you then you deserve to die over and over, I hate when people complain about something thats so easy to neutralise. Play smarter!

You cant sit at the start of the map and play the entire game shooting just mortars numbskull. There is a limit to the distance it can fire. And its not unbalanced, because it definately takes some skill to get it dead accurate.

      October 28th, 2011 at 10:13 pm

You may not be able to sit inside the spawn area but you sure as hell don’t have to stray too far out of it. It was in the first part of Rush on Operation Metro, the enemy was in his little grassy hill near the entrance of the second part of the map and just lobbing mortar shells passed the B point of the first part of the map. That’s already a pretty big distance. I wouldn’t say you’d have to be dead accurate with that thing. The guy manning the mortar shot a shell about 5 feet in front of me and I went down to 50% HP, no lie. It’s pretty overpowered in the sense that you cannot run out of ammo for it if a friendly Support just drops you an ammo crate, and the range on isn’t as small as it should be. The Mortar gadget in Bad Company 2 was just fine. I love the Battlefield series, but it seems like this time, Dice just tried to break what wasn’t broken. *cough* Battlelog *cough*

I’m sorry but taking 50% damage from a mortar round that landed 5 feet from you is hardly overpowered, what do you want? For it to hit you in the face to kill you? Which is close to what it needs to do already.

Same thing happened again today but even worse. Attacking team at part 1 of Operation Metro literally just kept raining endless shells on the M-COM stations. The Attacking team has 3 Mortars all of which being in vicinity of their spawn zone. DICE needs to fix the Mortars. I say either make it so you need to physically be able to see your target like in BC2, or make it so you cannot refill on shells. Raining endless amounts of 60mm shells across the map is getting old people.

The whole point of mortars is to rain death on u so why shouldnt they be used to suppress and kill the enemy if thats wat they are for. Plus, whats to stop u taking out your own mortar to shoot whoever is ‘mortar camping’ and getting amazing K/D ratios because he is able to use a mortar well uses his teams spotters to full advantage. And anyway Tyler if u got shot in real life with a mortar shell that landed 5 meters away u wouldnt feel too heathly either.

you don’t have to give up ammo box. i just got the mortar yesterday night and it only replaces c4, claymore. basically just gadget 2. and the ammo is infinite. battlefield prevented the mortar from being placed on roofs because of cheating, so you have to be on land and flat ground. if anyone finds a way to get it on a roof then let me know, my xbox live gamertag is SYMBOLICANIMISM

They should give motars to recon i feel, supports already have loads of good stuff, Recon in my opinion is the hardest not only to get kills but to get points in the game cause spotting enemies through MAV doesn’t really earn you that much when you help your team. Recons are meant to be “behind the lines support” (using MAV and such) to help out the team. Having a motor to support your team in an offensive way would be something good i feel for the Recon. Support Class would still be damn powerful without motors even

Also just to make it fair whenever a motor shoots a shell they should show it on the mini-map so enemies can at least find the guy to make him bombarding them with shells. That would be a good way to balance it out

In my opinion mortar haters are either campers or snipers who get mad when a shell lands on their back. Motars are by no means overpower. It takes a direct hit on top of the head to get kill by one shell. if you are on the move then you are ok. I had motors land on me the second I E out of my mortor, and still i survive the shell and the ones that follow.

^ This. The mortar’s splash radius is quite small. I think a player can kill more on foot, but it is kind of fun to use once in a while. Also, I get a lot of kill assists with it, but not many direct kills. Fun addition to the game though!

I agree totally! People need to realize that, in war – these things are MUCH more powerful than in the game – and can be set up on boats, on top of tanks, on roof tops etc.

I am normally a sniper – who gets accused of camping because I find a good spot and stay there (never snipe spawn points etc – that’s not sporting!). I get killed by mortars, or knifes, or other tanks – I congratulate my killer, not bitch about them. It’s part of the game.

The mortar is my next unlock on Support – and I can’t wait!

This isn’t Call of Duty. Play smarter!
