The L96A1 is a sniper rifle in Battlefield 3 that’s available in the Back To Karkand expansion pack, and is usable in regular Battlefield 3 as well. The L96A1 was developed and used in the 1980s, and is known for its accuracy and long rage capabilities. It’s a bolt action rifle that was featured in Battlefield 2 and returns in Battlefield 3.

Probably for camouflage, to help the barrel sort of blend in with the background.
During world war 2, some navies used a similarly broken up paint scheme on their warships to make it difficult to spot them. It’s called dazzle camouflage.
its called personal cam all soldiers are to do there cam and concelment before doing there TAB (tactical advanvce to battle) and snipers use scrim netting to try cover there rifles to add a bit more camo to there rifle.
it is also used to mach there ghille
I don’t like it =/ If it were wrapped around the barrel alone and not the barrel and the stock it wouldn’t be so bad.
But wrapping it around the gun where they’ve put it, especially if it was done tightly, would screw up the barrel’s free floatingness and ruin long range accuracy, especially with successive shooting.
Plus, snipers on BF3 don’t wear ghillies, or any real camo at all, they’re dressed as designated marksmen, so any degree of pointless rag wrapped around the gun isn’t going to help hide them in the slightest…
Should probably add that I’m talking about the actual gun model they’re putting in the game, not the pic at the top of this page.
Having tape raped around the barrel and stock is not going to reduce accuracy at all, whered did you even get that from?? the tape is for stopping light reflecting off the barrel….
as far as i know the l96a1 was desighned spec for arctic warfare the cold temp and snow and crap soo the white tape is prop a winter camo type deal
I believe the intention is for it to break up the silhouette of the rifle, as silhouette is a major concern for front line troops especially spec ops troops like snipers.
It isn’t actually there on the official weapon, my guess is that they just put it there because a. they could and b.becuase it makes it look a bit more hardcore
The l96 is an arctic sniper and the tape is white it is arctic ghille just not very much
Well what i know about the tape around the barrel is that you know how the gun has little circles at the barrel, well if you wrap that up with anything as long as its plastic, it actually silences the weapon more, even if you use a balloon (not a condom) its does it, so as long as you have that around your barrel and a silencer on, you know that the enemy wont hear you from a far distance. (I would know all of this, because i was in the army cadets and im currently in army training) =)
I don’t think it will be A1 version this should be upgraded to AW .338
they have upgraded some of the other guns so it wouldn’t make sense not to upgrade this

No sniper is a 1 shot kill, only headshots give you a 1 shot kill. Its the sad truth us snipers have to accept though it makes us better snipers too, because we start to aim for the head and with practice become aces at it

Yeah, and that’s why it’s 100x better than Call of Duty. Sniping on this requires skill, placement and effort. Call of Duty sniping requires that you aim in a general direction
Well, ive got 834 kills with my SV-98, and 732 headshots, so im a good sniper, and m98b is sorta hard to unlock.
thats really good but but when it comes to the best rifle than thats thats the m98b its most powerful and now dice patched that it has a chance to get a one shot kill to the chest what i think they should give us now though is a 50 cal that would be friging awesome.

800 meters is almost a half a mile, that’s a pretty long shot even for armed forces snipers, .8 miles requires intensive training by snipers to judge alot of factors while taking a shot and the longest recorded shot is at 1.5 miles, i don’t know where you come off thinking that 800m isn’t a hell of a shot or long range which it is besides the 800m is effective range not max range

oh shut up ben, 800 yards difficult for armed forces? the americans or the french maybe!!! british army snipers are expected to achieve first round kills at this range, the average squaddie is expected to hit targets upto 400 m on their ACMT every year!! and thats with the standard SA80 let alone with a L115a2, also while im on it the british special forces snipers are trained to achieve headshots at 800 yards, how do i know? ex royal anglian D coy 1st Bt vikings sniper PLT
ye well then maybe your “squaddies” should do more. with the exception of canadian snipers who (last time I checked) held the record for longest recorded kill, American snipers are the ones doing all the work. Its the american snipers assigned to the near impossible missions like killing several pirates in their own boat while holding a hostage.
I don’t care what the requirements for your squaddies are, their actual accomplishments don’t hold a candle to those of the US military snipers.
i am a currently serving royal marine commando SBS ( thats special forces) sniper and i can het a headshot at 1.3 miles every time with my L115A1. also yes a canadian holds the record for the longest recorded but i have an unconf’d at 1.9 miles.
Americans can’t get 1st shot kills at 800m?? I seem to remember a few years back when Somali pirates took a crew captive- it was US NAVY SEALs that made not only 1st round kills but did it from the moving deck of a ship.
Most recently SEALs went in and rescued several American hostages with no friendly KIA or hostage casualties. Where were the Brits?

Us American Marksmen are expected to hit a mans head at 1000m with a 7.62Nato rifle specifically an m24 or a m40a3 or an a5 Im not stating you british marksmen are not as good because there is no such thing. Besides you Brits own my favorite rifle, The artic warfare.
Marine snipers HAVE to hit a target 1000 yards away to even Qualify to be a sniper, keep talking sh*t about the greatest snipers a country such the U.S.A can ask for bud.

i still don’t see why people think this is a shocker longest recorded shot is 1.5 miles and armed forces snipers don’t engage enemies within 300m so anything farther is who they engage at long range, .5 miles is one hell of a shot, and most snipers wont take mile shots unless absolutely necessary because they can’t confirm the kill, sorry in games and in actual warfare snipers aren’t taking miraculous 5 mile shots and take shots in the 300-1000m range and usually don’t engage outside of that, and again effective range it can still be used for ranges outside of 800m to less effect
IRL there is no “less effect” for a sniper rifle, there is a kill and there is a missed shot.
For a high caliber sniper rifle there is only a kill with dismemberment. You can’t wound someone with a .338 LM if he is not wearing a M1 tank. With a shot energy of six and half thousands J it penetrates 24mm of steel plate. So it will shot though an average human chest even if it will be made of solid metall.
Up to couple of hundred meters works marksmen. Snipers can too, but that is not their main role. Their main role is to eliminate enemy commanders, machinegun dots, communications, transport vehicles, fuel depots and so on in this direction. They are not to kill 100 enemy soldiers in a direct firefight.
With a .50 anti-material rifle sniper can eliminate APC crews (along with their APCs), destroy landed jets and any other lightly armored vehicles on a distance of couple kilometers.
So every time a sniper in BF3 needs to take 3 shots (2 on HC) from M98B to take down enemy soldier (support for example) I am damn well ready to cry blood and ask God to make me unsee it.
DICE tried to make the game more MW-like and satisfy all the MW Rambostyle gamers, so they basically killed sniper class not to bother them. Pure MW fans will not play BF no matter what will it look like, and after what DICE did to BF3, a pretty lot of BF fans will not play it too, myself among them.

You have to do the ‘Creeping Death’ assignment, which is new to BF3. It requires the following:
50 headshots
50 Spot Assists
5 Silent Knife Takedowns
Then you get the L96. i got it last night, it’s a bit of an animal xD

I don’t know if you had figured this out yet but there are assignments you need to do in order to unlock weapons
go into my soldier click on assignements find the gun you wanna unlock and do the stuff it tells you to do to unlock it jesus guys come on its not that hard and if this does not help look iy up on youtube

I just love big f** guns, and snipers got the best ones.
There is nothing better than a splattered on a wall enemy in the morning. Or a shot down from a firearm heli. Now, after they took my favorite toys away, I just do it with 40mm HE or 12 gauge frag/bulkshot.
The plan is to get a “star” for each class to open all weapons (and get upgrades for the one I like) and then leave the game. Now it’s 70,110,50, 100 presents done (medic, engineer, support, recon). So if they will get my toys back in addons, I will return, if not then hell with em. Warface and Arma are coming soon. So no problems here. Just disappointed.
Waited, preordered, tested and disappointed, now for a second time with Karkand.

You have to accomplish 50 headshots, 50 spots and 5 knife takedowns
Someone asked about the tape…..just keep in mind there are no straight lines in nature. Keeping a barrel camo’d is just as important as keeping your head/body from detection.
Also, while shooting in real world conditions, the barrel heats up and can create a mirage in front of your scope. Match shooters have sophisticated sleeves that they slide over their barrel so they can put 20-60 rounds down range in a few minutes without having to contend with target distortion.
Just think if Dice/EA could implement barrel physics….sniper spammers would lose accuracy as their barrel reaches it’s temp limit…cant see down the scope as well…shots deviate……WOW.
so, i unlocked it a couple hours after i got the map pack (Ps3), and it doesnt come with a Bipod. Instead it comes with a flash suppressor. and there arent any tapes on it. Its steadier and stiffer than the m40 i think. you could shoot without holding your breath pretty easily, and accurately. meaning that the cross hairs dont move as much as the others. Its pretty good imo
So, does it get a Bipod eventually, or is there just not one to unolock at all? It doesnt really need it but it just looks cool

the l96 comeswith flash suppressor not a bipod, the transfer between the sv98 to the L96 is difficult as the bullet drop is almost nothing in comparison to the sv98 also if im not mistaken reload times are a bit quicker

They didn’t nerf the recon kit, they balanced it, in BC2 it was so over-powered it was a joke, one hit kill any range, easy no scopes, easy quick scopes, motion mines to know exactly where the enemy is… If you think that you were skilled running around with your 4x scope, or clever to whap out the OP shotguns and use motion mines then I’m sorry. You are an Idiot. It was an extreme inbalance and I’m happy to see it fixed, now that snipers actually take skill, I will be fine with using them again.
They “killed” the recon kit? No, they took away you crack which your addicted too and now you have withdrawl simptoms, now that recons are equals you actually need to use some skill and you actually need to think hard, that is why I love the recon kit.
I don’t remember BC2 having one hit kill any range outside of hardcore mode. Wasn’t it the same, only one shot weapons were pump-slugs and bolt-action rifle head shots? Shotty slugs I’ll concur or more balanced now. I’m happy to not see so many wookies anymore and I enjoy using the mav more than pokeball motion sensors too. The most difficult aspect of sniping I’ve noticed in BF3 vs BC2 is it’s more difficult to line up shots ahead of sprinting targets but I think that’s due to the fact that you can sprint strafe now, not a bad thing at all. Also if you don’t like the scope glint, it only show’s while you’re zoomed in.
My friend you act as if the only way To balance a sniper is by taking away the sheer power these guns are supposed to have game devs just like to play the lazy card and depower the gun. There are multiple other ways to prevent stupid ass trick shotters who mistreat the weapon and have no general respect for the power the gun they hold. Decrease movement speed and put a cap on sprint distance increase scope in time increase scope sway increase damage the further away the sniper is any of these would be a much better implement then merely decreasing power
L96 vs M98b which is better? other than its each magazine capacity
From what I can tell the m98b is still better havent done alot of testing with the l96 but the damage is the same as the m40 and sv98 but with some added range it appears
This range is wrong I’ve got a 986m headshot with the L96
its not a max range, its an effective range. the round loses accuracy after 800m. the artuc warfare can touch you at a mile and a bit (proper royal naval term there! LOL) you just need a lot of hours on the system
