EA has announced that Battlefield 3 developer DICE will be working on Star Wars games in the future, built on the new Frostbite 3 game engine. EA recently secured an exclusive Star Wars license from Disney, which gives them freedom to make video games based on the popular movie franchise.

So far there are no details about what kind of Star Wars game DICE might be working on, but we certainly hope they do a multiplayer shooter set in the Star Wars universe. We kinda had something like that before: Star Wars Battlefront.

Star Wars: Battlefront 3 running on Frostbite with 64 players…a squad of clones capturing a control point, high def futuristic guns blazing and lazers whizzing by, a droid tank shells their position causing huge chunks of the environment to come crashing down around the clones. Meanwhile a republic attack gunship lands in the heat of a carnage ridden battle to drop off clones, only to take off into the air and crash into a mountain followed by a disgruntled “why is the sun even more obnoxiously blinding than the last DICE game?” in game chat.

Despite the guy in DICE studios pushing for in-game suns that give you the sensation of looking directly at a flash-bang grenade going off, a Battlefront sequel or something similar to it made by DICE could be a HUGE game, especially if they keep the core elements of the previous Battlefronts.

The irony is that BattleFront 3 was cancelled due to LucasArts sale to Disney.
The BattleFront games originated with a Star Wars mod of BattleField 1942.
So now, the company that no longer supports mods, is being paid to make a sequel to a mod of their earlier game.

What a shame the rebels joined the dark side.

It’s only going to be good if I can pilot an AT-AT into battle and drop off a squad of Snow Troopers.
