Battlefield 3 matches
DICE has announced a brand new feature for Battlefield 3, one that competitive gamers will love. Called “Matches”, the new system will help gamers to arrange and coordinate competitive multiplayer matches. Setting up matches happens via Battlelog, and the player is required to have access to a dedicated server. Players can set the player count, start time, team size, and map rotations, as well as other settings and tweaks. On top of that, Battlefield 3 Matches brings tracking of rounds played and stats to Battlelog. There’ still no ETA on when Matches will be released, and it’s unknown whether the new feature will be free for all or for Premium members only. You can read more about Battlefield 3 Matches on the official blog.

As great of an idea as this is i think it is too little to late. Its basically an in-house set up that is just like gamersportal. In my opinion, if you or your team is already active on gamersportal, I don’t think this match setup thing is going to get as my use as it would have four months ago. But we will see. I wouldn’t mind trying it out.

Kinda, If they just implemented mod support and proper dedicated servers we could easily create mods and servers specifically for competitive play.

And isnt competitive play kinda rendered useless with their shitty client sided hit detection.

A “true” sequal will have voip in game, in game server browser, 6 man squads, spawn on squad leader only, no kill cam, spectator mode, commander and the list goes on.

BF3 was never and will never be a BF2 sequal.

Seriously? with the unpredictable hit detection issues?

You do know, that DICE confirmed on teamspeak, that a player with a less powerful PC and a “weaker” internet will “automatically have an online advantage” against other players?

So if im barely getting 40 FPS on a dsl, going against someone with 100 FPS and cable, by default i have an advantage.

And you want to make it competitive? really?

If you do not believe me, ask anyone on BFO, tweet to dice devs and ask them or search their tweets because they all confirmed it numerous times.

DSL and Cable are general and relative terms. What speed of each are you referring to? kind of important variables missing there.

Zinto confirmed it several times to us. Low ping vs high ping players, the game, by default, will favor high ping players. I am in Germany, when i play on US servers, hit detection is spot on with 120-180 ping. Now, when i am on German servers, with 5-15 ping, it is utter bs for me, with regards to hit detection.

When i mentioned DSL and Cable, basically a max 16Mb/s down and 1Mb/s up compared to cable which starts at 8Mb/s down and reaches 100Mb/s down. But quality differs between them both.

Do you see my point in general? it is kind of like lag compensation in COD, it gives those with bad connections a “fairer” fight than those with good ones.

I also know several friends, who join local servers, but they download something in the backround (jtv or twitch) which playing to take advantage of DICE’s system, and that is based on connections alone, performance is a whole new story.

I understand why you mean. 16 meg down cap? That’s pretty low. Unfortunately dsl is often capped at 24-36 megs, but it could easily out class cable, just isn’t offered. Seems to cater more towards casual Inet usage and daily functions rather than gaming/ performance.

It is a console port, they had VIP slots (reserved slots) working months before PC.

“PC is the lead platform” was all just a marketing gimmick, heck the UI is outsourced by a 3rd party, who have some experience in consoles, not PC.

PS3 (consoles) get DLC first, they nerf and break balances to weapons and attachments, according to what consoles complain about, not PC.

PC was screwed from day 1, dice is off my list. I am no longer supporting them.

Seems like the sort of feature that DICE would want in their game as oppose to Close Quarters which i cant honestly believe DICE where fully behind, more EA. But as I said a competitive organisation feature seems like a cool feature. Marketing and prices ect. is up to EA… So its their move guess. Man, we play consoles because they’re simple, all of our friends play, and they’re cheap, because some people actually have important stuff to buy and bills to pay. So when your PC crashes and you gotta buy a new one or parts for it or whatever, that’s just more money. PCs are a money hole that isn’t worth it just to play a damn game.

Nice for the premium server-owners. Just like premium itself, no interest. That Anti-Aliasing-switching-thing doesn’t work for the PS3. Hitbox-detection isn’t working properly, either. Every time they invent something new, the game is getting worse gameplay-wise. No sound while playing, lagging like hell, no hits detected when you have to act fast. I’m not able to play this game how it’s meant to be. I am truely beginning to think that this is the final result we are getting from DICE with this piece of crap. I know when I am enjoying this game and that are the few times I can do what I am suppost to do and that is winning. Why do I have to use the biggest bullets there are? Which are infact the tank-type. Still, those basterds get away. Darn LAG-switchers. I hate you…

Just a tip from me. Search for “normal 2″-servers from DICE/EA itself. I do this all the time. No regulations for me. I always make my own choices, not depending on what any dumbass-host wants. So, DICE/EA it is. Nothing else. Ok, sometimes you may find just a few, but on the standard-servers from DICE/EA you can do whatever YOU want. This is not a message to any of the cheater-clan, they better get the hell out of the game, so it remains a honest and clean competitive game.

Ok, matches is a good idea for those few that want that competitive game, but have the developers noticed that the millions of casual gamers are the ones not playing anymore? I remember the days when you could jump into a fair DICE server and stand a 50-50 chance of winning or losing. Now, I have to join a private server, am forced onto the casual gamer’s team to go up against an entire clan who all have mics and lag switches (I have a mic, but many casual gamers do not).
Yes, BF3 is a great competitive game, but MOST of the customers are casual players. “Matches” is a great idea; “private servers” a good idea, but why not put back in the fair DICE servers we used to have – use the money you make from the private servers to support the larger part of the community. Not everyone has the time to join clans, etc.
I am glad that most of the in-game fixes have been addressed in the last patch; I have started to come back to the game as it is more playable; but seriously – BRING BACK OFFICIAL DICE SERVERS – or at least give us easy short-cuts to them if they already exist. No casual gamer buys premium for a game they don’t play anymore.

What annoys me is that they have the right ideas for Battlefield 3 but are executing it all the wrong way. Take the latest “matches” idea for example. BF3 is a competitive game, and I can see why they are drawing on that to make money. But you can’t make money off a concept if no one buys it. You only have to look at the low number of “premium” sales to prove this. It’s a game that is great for competitive play, but only 800,000 or so have the time to play it competitively. The rest of the customers are just casual gamers asking for some NORMAL BALANCED FAIR SERVERS, such as the original DICE servers that kept everyones’ interest in the beginning. If nobody is playing, because you cannot have a fair game, going up against entire clans and losing each time, you can’t sell yet more competitive set-up crap to about 85% of your customers, because they are no longer playing.
WAKE UP, DICE! Your new idea appeals to about 10% of your customers. You’ll make more money appealing the larger group. Use the money you are making to increase the number of OFFICIAL DICE SERVERS.
Normal rules; normal tickets; randomized balanced teams; full map rotations; nobody getting kicked for killing a server admin who bought your premium, a server, and the rights to screw over the 85% of us casual gamers who don’t have the time to deal with BF3′s competitive edge. Let the competition be on the Battlefield, not in our wallets to buy advantages. GIVE US BACK FAIR PLAY!

It’s even less than 10%. They sold about 15 million copies of the game and this on all platforms. 800 thousand have bought the premium-package. So it’s a mear 5% that really have interest in what Battlefield 3 has to offer extra. Furthermore, because of the fixed game-rotations the QUICK-GAME-button isn’t of any use anymore. You will never know where you end up. It will be on one of the fixed game-rotations of DICE itself or on any rented-server with stupid rules and that isn’t what you want. I like the conquest-mode at best. I want to play it on ALL of the maps available ALL of the time, but I can’t because of this fixed-thing. This is no freedom. This is compartimalisation. Putting all the bits in very small boxes and then close them. For the casual player the possebility of having the option of a quick-game is very important. This is how it was before. Real freedom, to choose what you want. I personally think DICE/EA actually did this to regulate internet-traffic on their servers. To spead it out. Make it more managable. Nevertheless, I’m not a fan of the fixed-thing.
