EA France’s Battlefield 3 TV segment got a chance to visit the guys at DICE and check out the work on the upcoming DLC, Battlefield 3 Armored Kill. While the video above is in French, the interview itself is in English, so you’ll understand most of it. Basically, Armored Kill is about the “epic scale of Battlefield”, as lead designer Niklas Fergaus puts it. Armored kill will include 4 new maps and half a dozen new vehicles. We also get the names of the 4 maps in the new DLC: Death Valley, Bandar Desert, Almorz Mountain (the snow map!), and Armored Shield. Check out the first two screenshots of the Armored Shield map after the break, in full 1080p of course.

This will be a DLC of epic proportions. It offers something for everyone: nostalgic gameplay and visuals for the Battlefield veterans, and a true battlefield experience for newer players. This expansion pack will be what makes battlefield the best fps series in the history of gaming. I don’t think any true battlefield fan could not be eagerly anticipating the release of this DLC.

Nostalgic gameplay and visuals? This isn’t a patch, it’s a map pack. The gameplay is still BF3, and how can visuals be nostalgic when none of these maps appeared in past games? How can the one comparison, that being to Heavy Metal, appeal to Veterans? Someone that played only BC2/BF3 is not a Veteran.

Please define a true Battlefield experience. Since the only thing changing is the maps and vehicles, I would like to hear what you believe is so true about this while the gameplay remains the same as BF3.

Could you go into further detail about how 1942, Vietnam, 2, 2142, BC1, Heroes, and P2W have contributed to make Battlefield the best series ever?

          Please define a Battlefield fan.

^ Someone who can get over the old times and learn to accept the fact that Battlefield has evolved, for the better or not. DICE tries bringing something different and more appealing to all players.

Also I don’t recall Battlefield fans being elitist douchebags but I may be wrong on that one.

And just to waste some time and “base” my claim on something, I’ll share my view on your points:

Health Regeneration: Unless you are bad tracking enemies or they flee away, I don’t see this much of an issue.

Ammo Pooling: I’m really neutral on this because it isn’t “that” bad but can get real annoying once in a while.

Infinite Vehicle Ammo: Well, not all vehicles had finite ammo before either, and it works fine for combat.

No Command Structures to Facilitate Teamwork: Must agree on this; combat tends to get stale without these perks.

No Squad Leader Spawn Only: Not really agree on this, but an option to force this on your squad could be real useful.

          No Recoil: There is recoil.

          No Spread: There is spread.

Low Times to Kill: For the better.

Perks: An improvement? If you like tactical gameplay, picking the right perks in your squad counts.

Attachments: This is one of the things that works for Battlefield 3; customization of weapons can lead to some surprising combos.

Killcams: I can’t see anything negative to this unless it reveals your secret camping spot.

3D Spotting: Gotta agree on this one.

No Mod Tools: Same, awful decision.

          No VOIP: Shame.

Small Maps: Maps aren’t small; they are more linearly designed with more deadlands.

Sound Spotting: If you mean the Commo Rose, the new spotting system works fine for me (and you still get the audio cue)

Infinite Sprint: And while you are marathoning across the map, you are a sitting duck so it’s the same.

Oversimplified Classes: I prefer these streamlined clasess than the cumbersome ones from the past BF games.

Spawn Invulnerability: For the better, maybe? Unless you like getting killed while spawning, and the invul time isn’t that long.

No Autoadmin: Again, this was because of the breaking down of Commander Mode.

False Advertising: Hype tends to do that, but if you stick to the facts in their marketing it isn’t false.

This looks epic but there’s going to be only 24 players on consoles so I am thinking of selling my laptop and Xbox 360 and buying/building a new PC. If you are a PC gamer, please answer some of my questions ( I know this is off topic but I am asking this because, a lot of PC gamers are in this site). So if I have a crappy PC that can only run games like Battlefield 1942, GTA San Andreas etc and if I upgrade my processor to intel corei7 and a GTX 680 graphics card, can it run Battlefield 3? Is upgrading only the processor and graphics card enough or do I have to upgrade everything? I mean processor and graphics card is the only thing that effects performance right?

well you also have to worry about your memory, but that’s tertiary to the 3 biggest things, them being graphics cards, processor and then the memory.. oh and bf3 won’t run on windows xp, so also remember that (because bf3 uses only dx9 and above i believe, i could be wrong and it be dx10 but whatever the case it won’t run on windows xp)

        @ Kill Skill

To put it in a nutshell, one would need more information to give you a more accurate answer.

        Either way, here’s the situation:

From what you said, I’m assuming your computer is pretty old. Because of this, your motherboard may only support AGP video cards while now days video cards are PCI.

As far as processors go; processors can’t be dropped into any old motherboard. Certain processors of varying ages are only compatible with certain motherboards. If you could find a processor upgrade for your computer, I doubt it would be powerful enough to run BF3 given your computers age.

If your motherboard turns out to not be that old and you can upgrade it, you would more than likely need a bigger power supply to run the new hardware, and you would also need good enough RAM and don’t forget Windows 7.

For the video card you suggested; the thing cost $500. I’d be surprised if it couldn’t run BF3 on completely maxed out graphics with that. But, I -highly- suggest you get something cheaper, especially given your budget. You could pick up a $150-250$ video card that could run BF3 on medium to high settings no problem.

My point is; you’re better off getting a whole new computer, simply because your current one would probably need to be completely gutted. The only thing that you wouldn’t be replacing would be the hard drive and the case, the case being a “maybe”.

Keep in mind; this is just my assumption based upon the limited information you gave. If your computer is more than 3 or 4 years old (which from what you said, it probably is) it’s very unlikely you could upgrade it to run BF3 without replacing literally 80-90% of the parts. However, it wouldn’t hurt to look and see if you can upgrade, but don’t give your hopes up.

You could pick up a pre-built computer for around $700-850 (retail price) that could run BF3 on medium to high graphics. Some places that sell pre-built computers have sales from time to time which lowers the price, and you could also build your own computer which can lower the cost, but it comes with the headache of putting it together and making sure everything is compatible.

The things I didn’t cover are the details such as what hardware you should get if you get a computer. Those details are up to you and your budget, but just keep in mind; you pay for what you get, but you don’t need to shell out 3k to run BF3. And don’t fall for fancy name brands. More expensive and cooler looking does not = better and worth the price. (Yes, I’m talking about you, Alienware computers.)

Sorry for the off-topic post everyone. I wanted to help him out with his situation.

Forgot to add the TL;DR version.

          @ Kill Skill

TL;DR: If you’re computer is 3+ years old (from what you described, it sounds like it) then its unlikely you’ll be able to upgrade to run BF3, so you’re better off getting a new computer.

Yeap. I built my PC myself from scratch.

AMD Phenom II Quad Black Edition 965 3.4Hz
          8GB of RAM
          1GB EVGA GTX460
          and Corsair GS700 power unit

and of course motherboard, dvd/cd rw, memory card slots, case, coolers etc – all about $900 maybe event a bit less.

Runs BF3 on “Custom” (determined by the game itself) settings at about 50+FPS. If set to Ultra drops to 30-40 but goes to 25 and a bit below on some maps. So I just don’t mess with it since the graphics are still nice.

Maybe when BF4 comes out I’ll upgrade the GPU.

If large maps are what makes a Battlefield game true to the series, why do you have to pay $15 to get 4 potentially medium sized maps that came out almost a year after release?

If large maps are what makes a Battlefield game true to the series, why are the majority of maps in 1942, Vietnam, BF2, and 2142 small? Are you implying the originals are not true Battlefield games?

First of all I respect the calm tone of your posteven though you disagree mine.

My definition of a true Battlefield experience is using realistic visuals, gameplay, and teamwork to help the team win. Not caring about your own k/d or stats or anything else, just doing everything possible to help the team win. Not trying to lone wolf it, but be a team player.

I believe that a true Battlefield fan is a person on this blog, looking for the latest news and updates about the Battlefield series. Somebody who, again, plays as a team player, with only the objective in his mind, not stats or anything else. Who, most of all enjoys this series, the greatest in the history of fps games.

I’m surprised they haven’t done any BC2 remakes.

Some maps would lend themselves better to 64 player than maps in BF3.

I just assumed BC3 would be next. So they’d be holding off remakes for that. Or for late in the BF3 life cycle to get people’s appetites wet for BC3.

Part of me wonders at this stage of BF. Why not do a BF game almost entirely of new versions of old maps. Let’s face it. A huge amount of people have never played them. Also many of us haven’t played them for so long, it’s like they’re new again.

From DICE’s perspective it’s surely got to be easier to take existing designs and rebuild new version. Than think up entirely new map designs.

I have to say, in the interview when he said one map is based roughly on someones idea from the board. Part of me was like… I had some kick arse ideas I posted… I so hope he read mine … lol

Things like a conquest Assault map set in a big thunder/rain storm.
One team starts entirely far out at sea, on a couple of carriers. The shore isn’t even visible in the rain. Maybe faint glows of fire and lights. Where the attackers have to land troops and vehicles to attack. Then a progression of docks, warehouse/factories. As well as suburbs which lead to a big mountain/cliff top city.

Think Oman combined with Noshahr Canals/Panama Canal and Sharqi Peninsula. Much more dramatic and in a thunderstorm at night. The city perched high making it a bitch to attack up some set winding roads, or from landing troops. However being on cliffs, defenders can easily defend and also parachute down and flank the points on the shore.

You know, they should do a map design conquest. Where the best concept get’s taken and polished by their map designers.

If there isn’t rush, I’m gonna kill myself… The only reason I don’t play close quarters much is not the maps, but there is not rush

“Huge maps…” Now if that wasn’t a joke. I honestly don’t know what the hell they’re smoking over there in Stockholm. Battlefield has always been about large maps, vehicular warfare and teamwork.

When you remove that emphasis on teamwork, by removing the tools which aided and elevated teamwork, the rest matters little. The Battlefield franchise blended flash and substance… Not the case anymore.

On one of the DLC’s they should make Marines vs PLR.
They should also do French police vs PLR.

Maybe with the second-to-last DLC or End Game they could also throw in the People’s Republic of China and/or the EU. Seeing as how they have a lot of British/German/French/NATO weapons, plus some Chinese ones.

And maybe the Barrett M82A1/107A1 semi-auto .50 sniper rifle from the campaign…of course the assignment to unlock it would have to take a ridiculous amount of time to complete. Don’t want to have the noobz trolling everyone with a Barrett and an ACOG at close range.

bear with me. and brainstorm with me.

just like how Damavand Peak has the jump around the middle of the round, Caspian Border has the falling antennae when the round ends, and Back to Karkand has the explosions and building destruction (the tower at/around “City”, point A) when the round starts, i hope DICE implements these types of aesthetic/epic ideas to the new maps.

someone here on bf3blog comments earlier mentioned avalanches on the snow map (preferably should be dynamically initiated in real time i.e. by explosives set by players, jet rocket pods, sustained heavy gunfire, etc. – but could also be a premeditated event set to happen sometime during the round, like the falling Caspian antennae at the round’s end and the Karkand tower getting hit at the round’s beginning) that’s the kind of thing i mean.

for example, why not have a map start the round with dawn/daybreak, leading into a beautiful sunrise as the game continues? if it’s a Conquest round with many tickets, if it’s long enough, it can get brighter as the sun gets higher in the sky and around noontime i guess it’s as bright as how most maps currently look. maybe another map starts with the middle of the day and leads into sunset, then dusk/twilight, and if the round is taking long enough, into night. perhaps they can forget realism and let the speed in which timeofday light/color effects change be exaggerated/accelerated so that a whole day can pass lol why not have sunrise, sunset, and sunrise again! best of all, let the server decide what time of hours and how fast in-game time goes. DICE can just prepare the appropriate weather/timeofday/color/light effects for an entire 24-hour cycle and let server administrators decide which, if not hours to use. oh, and yo imagine if one round starts sunny, clouds move in (i highly doubt BF3 will implement volumetric clouds tho, but maybe they can still do it in 2D method which can look 3D), and eventually drizzle turns to downpour.

how about in one map, the accessibility of areas will vary at different times, which can be scripted events but the time in which they’ll occur can be randomized. think of how Left4Dead has “The Director”. so perhaps at any time in the round, a certain area (a small valley/ravine?) can be flooded. or another will have bridges removed (either by players taking it out or a scripted event somehow ending up with the bridges removed), necessitating air/navy assault vehicles and nerfing infantry’s potential cuz they have to swim (this could totally have been the case in Wake Island, as was oft mentioned by the community). how about even…. a particular capture point will be only temporary. like, imagine if the hilltop at Caspian Border, due to some scripted event (we can hear some soldiers over radio ordering a bombing, just like when they do at the end with the antennae), the WHOLE HILLTOP is demolished. like, it’s a plateau. or flat ground, even with Checkpoint/Forest levels. or a crater. and it happens at a particular time in the round. and Conquest Large (5 points) has just turned into Conquest (4 points) within the same round. the cappable command points (i doubt they’ll exceed the current max of 7) can decrease (and maybe increase in the same round somehow, if not by having the lost cap point return then by introducing a new cap point), and perhaps increase if the round starts with less than 7 cappable points.

    1) avalanches on snow maps
    2) dynamic weather and time of day/night effects; we should see the sky change color and sun/clouds change position as the round progresses – think Crysis (level “Assault”) or Far Cry 2
    3) number of control points in Conquest changing throughout round’s duration

Yeah a version of Rush which is truly large scale. Where the objects alter the environment. Like Blowing a damn. Where you then use newly flooded area’s to move with boats to the next area.

Have dramatic events instead of the Mcoms. If you’re blowing the damn, many people on both teams can be killed.

If it’s blow up a big building, If you just camp the charges, you won’t be able to escape. Stuff like that.

I defo think they should do the moving cap-points idea.. especially for consoles.. as we only ever have 5 flags when the maps are built around 7, it would be nice to mix them up abit for variety

I’d rather see more DLC map packs for bf3 than a bf4 frankly

Let’s see more of what the fb2 engine can do before making a new game

I’m a bit surprised grEAdy haven’t done this as its far easier to make a map pack for an existing game than a new game I’d have thought

For example if yet released a map pack of all the bf2 maps remade, I don’t know any player who wouldn’t buy it
