Battlefield Premium is turning out the be quite popular, as EA revealed today that over 800,000 Battlefield 3 players have forked over the $50 to become Premium members. And that’s only after being just two weeks on the market, according to EA’s Patrick Soderlund, who spoke to USA Today. In case you’re not familiar with Battlefield Premium, it’s main feature is early access to DLC — which is also free. In addition, Premium members receive a whole bunch of perks, including double-XP weekends, dog tags, a special knife, and more.

“We’re actually only two weeks into it, so it’s a little early to tell how this is going to pay off. It certainly it looks very promising right now.” said Soderlund in the interview. It should look promising — 800,000 Premium members translates to $40 million in revenue, which was roughly the entire budget for Battlefield 3. Oh yeah, I remember that. After all, let’s see….. Battlefield 3 has sold, what, 14 Million Copies? Battlefield Premium getting almost 1/14th of those Sales…. So impressive.

Actually, if you consider that less than 50% of those Sales are still playing, it gets cut down to 1/7, so about 1 in every 7 Players probably has it. Still, a minor number, so this whole “ZOMFG 800K” is hilarious. Its a Glorified “Season Pass”, what were people expecting.

You’re forgetting that Premium hasn’t been out for that long, it’s not as if the 800K Premiums they’ve sold is how many they will sell in total.

Premium will sell less and less the longer it is out. Currently if you dont want or already have close quarters and BTK then premium will actually cost you more money.

So if people dont buy premium now or dont expect to buy ALL expansions then it will continue to decline in sales.

For people like me already owning BTK with the limited edition and having absolutely no interest in close quarters is actually going to cost me more money in the long run.

So yea i dont expect these numbers to get to much higher.

I disagree, I think more people will buy it as we get closer to the release date of Armored Kill, and hear more about Aftermath and End Game, I won’t buy Premium for Close Quarters, but the other 3 expansions could be very nice, especially Armored Kill.

Which reminds me, yes. There’s about 5 Million out of those 14 Million which pre-ordered, so they got BtK free. Unless they’re going to buy Close Quarters as well, it would be cheaper for them to get Armored Kill, Aftermath and End Game individually.

More information on Aftermath/End Game might boost sales slightly, but that’s all assuming the Game hasn’t been abandoned by even more people by the time we get it, or by the time they Launch.

Everyone bought it because of the bandwagon marketing technique also they wanted the op weapons that come with it, for example the spas has a tighter spread than the 870 and a faster fire rate than the 870 even though I am not a shot gun guy they could have made it amazing at cq and crappy at engagements over 20m but I had some clan mates test this with me at 35m it still dose 50 while the 870 dose 17 damage. PS They are giving away my mvp ribbons to premium players now because if I get 11,000 points and a premium members gets 5,501 if its double xp his score doubles and becomes 11,002 and he earns mvp if you don’t believe me try it out.

Do not forget, EA claims 10 million sold and 15 million shipped for BF3 copies.

800,000 premium compared to that, means at least 8% of owners have BF3 Premium, do you call that popular?

Actually sold went up to 13 Million a couple of months ago, was said on a Conference Call, and they mentioned how less than 50% of those 13 Million had logged in during the entire last month too, so I’m guessing from the still active Players, less than 1 person every 7 has Premium right now.

Yea if your satisfied with premium then thats fine. The thing about it that i dont like is that it makes the original game worse for people who didnt buy it. We have to wait 2 more weeks to play dlc. We get back of the bus treatment for server queue’s and what not.

If premium didnt make the game worse for people without it I really would not care that much about it.

They should actually try to add features instead of taking them away and pretending like their giving you something special.

          @nick913

I see two week early access as a negative and a positive.
I’m assuming I wont have to go over the negative so I will jump right into how I see it as a positive.
For those who don’t have Premium they have to wait two weeks before getting the DLC. This means that for two weeks Premium players get to mess around on the DLC finding what ever and can say what is wrong or what is cool about the DLC.

Armored kill is going to be awesome so it doesn’t really count their but for End game and After Math? We still don’t know anything about those DLCs. And even when we get more information about them, there will still be a portion of people questioning if its worth it or not. Premium players can give more gameplay and commentary on if it is worth it.

I’m not saying this out weighs the other stuff, I’m just trying to say its not all completely bad.

What would have been better and a use of EA’s fat heads is that they give us two week early access but we only get to play on non-ranked servers.

I see your point but i still dont look at it as a positive. I see that forcing you to wait 2 weeks is only good for people incapable of waiting 2 weeks by them selves. If there wasnt premium I could still wait 2 weeks but i could also get it day one if i was confident that it was excellent.

I get your point but still its just kinda a negative.

      Better not be.

Dudes whou bought premium support the ‘NoSupportAnymore’. DICE has to release so many DLCs in so short time that literally they don’t have time to fix the game. Since the release, we just receive balance adjustments which yes, they’re nesessary, but require no real work and even these came untested.

All gamers as a whole lose in long term.

They threw out of place weapons, CoD-like, spread-less, recoil-less which they will be nerfed, but after 2-3 patches for obvious reasons…

5 millions had pre-ordered… I guess most of the 800k had pre-ordered, which means they repaid B2K… Some of them won’t even play CQ and some others, both… But they still ‘save’ money… They don’t even know all other DLCs will be about.

Europeans and Aussies the greatest suckers… We’ve to pay the most expensive price in the whole world… I paid 34.9€ for Limited Edition, Box, with B2K and they ask 49.9€ for premium, digital content…

As I said, better not be one… Never.

Actually Kiwi, I didn’t get it. That’s not to say that I won’t eventually, but I’m thinking of just waiting for the Armored Kill 2 week early access. CQ feels like a waiting room between B2K and AK to me; basically bonus weapons that will come with AK once I’ve signed up.

If it all runs on the principles of getting more money. Considering, when you got enough “green” to spend, buying the whole PACKAGE. Having all the bandwidth you need and the lowest ping you can afford, because it is a money-thing. I wonder, what the shortest path to the highest rank actually costs? And how good do the top-players feel about themselfs, because they all use highspeed-internet, preferrably over glass-connection (120mb/s >). And take this from me, this is the “real” advantage in this game. As it always has been from the moment online-gaming was invented. When you ask yourself, “what the fuck, why did I missed that guy?”, it’s because of the amount of little “green” notes you spend on it. BIG brother is always going to be BIG because of this. Don’t tell me crap about learning to aim straight or somethings like that. I know how it works. Now I have to find a way to cope with it and eventually live with it. OK, I’m over this, let’s start a new one. ATTACK… Battle between the slow-speeders and the the living in the fast-lainers.

I forgot something. There’s also a fanclub of LAG-switchers that ruin the game. It’s a total paradise for cheaters on every platform. Remember that too, the next time you play a nice cosy game of BF3. By pressing, in most cases the famous “LAG-BUTTON”, the game doesn’t register the position of the player doing this and the hitbox disapears for a moment. Long anough to displace themselfs to get out of the line of fire or to get behind you to stabe you. This happens so quickly in most cases that you never can escape. When you’re really close to them you can’t even move or fire your weapon. When this accures, you’re screwed, say bye, bye. Not so funny, but it happens.

For every premium player there must be at least 5 others who consider it to be a kick in the teeth by EA. BF3 was overhyped and undercooked on release. B2k re-established a fair bit of hope for me that the game could be decent, but CQ seems like a big step backwards. I love that sort of gameplay, but COD and MOH do it better. Premium was dropped way too late and after way to many issues. It should have been an apology to us hardcore fans, not a pathetic money grab based around DLC that mostly doesn’t even have a concept yet. I’m still playing and I’ve got CQ. Armoured kill looks good. I think the community will start to get too splintered by the time the other packs come out for them to be picked up by a lot of non premium players. EA will have their money by then, so the quality of those packs is probably going to be questionable. I predict a fire sale by EA for premium by the end of the year, if not a lot sooner.

Are you high? B2K didn’t instill any hope at all. B2K was nothing more than watered down versions of the previous maps. Nothing was kept 1:1, which DICE lied about, and all the maps lost an extreme amount of content in order to please COD players who hate complex level design. The before and after pictures are horrendous.

BC2 was a pile of shit, and BF3 is even worse. But not all hope is lost. People are beginning to realize just how atrocious this DICEA bullshit is. They’re standing up and fighting back by not buying any of their products. If this keeps up, I don’t even think DICE will exist by the end of 2013. They won’t have anyone left to buy their pathetic excuses of “Battlefield games”.

Battlefield premium isn’t that bad of an idea in my opinion, its just some of the things they’re doing with it.

Things like premium having priority over you while waiting in line for a full server, or having to have premium to play with the developers for that one event. Isn’t there even going to be a premium only DLC?

For God’s sake if you do not like Close Quarter, then premium is not for you! On every single article there are complaints for such stupid reasons! If tou scroll down every article, at least 1/5 of the comments are griping and complaining about one thing or another. It gets pathetic after awhile, espescially because this is not an EA/Dice website designed for game fixes. It’s about news and opinoins on it. What EA should have done is discount $15 for already having B2K or per expansion already bought, that way it adjusts automatically and fairly.

“It should look promising — 800,000 Premium members translates to $40 million in revenue, which was roughly the entire budget for Battlefield 3.”

Never give a sucker an even break.

DICE/EA cannot purchase a gaming rig for you. It’s not the game that sucks, it’s your rig. I have yet to freeze or experience lag. Go console if all you can afford is a Dell.
