BF3 xbox 360Recently, EA announced that Battlefield 3 had sold 5 million copies during its first week, an impressive number even for an AAA game. Now additional data from third party sales trackers reveals the breakdown of the sales, i.e. how many units were sold on each platform, in approximate numbers.

It’s clear that the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3 has taken a considerable lead, outselling the PlayStation 3 and PC versions by a huge margin. In fact, the Xbox 360 version outsold the PS3 and PC versions combined.

  • Xbox 360: 2.2 million
  • PlayStation 3: 1.5 million
  • PC: 500,000

The numbers aren’t 100% accurate as some digital retailers, including EA’s Origin, haven’t disclosed their sales numbers, so it’s likely that the numbers for the PC version are higher than reported. Just after Battlefield 3 shipped, EA reported that 10 million units were shipped.

How ironic how the console that gets the best version of COD buys the most copies of Bf3. :D

This isn’t great news for pc gamers who want future BF games to be developed on PC first, then ported to consoles. Dice revealed that PC wasn’t the lead this time around. And now with consoles leading sales, don’t expect to ever see a pc lead BF game ever again.

Dude did you not read? EA Origin sales are not counted in, 90% of the PC gaming market is Digital. No Origin sales means that none of the digital PC purchases were counted in with this chart. For a few years now PC has been leading in the digital sales market, that’s why hardly any retail stores have PC games anymore, it’s all digital, which means our PC numbers have to be well into the millions. This was purely Retail (physical discs).

Yeah I read that. I don’t think that’s going to make up the difference of the combined total of xbox/ps3. Even if it comes close or even slightly edges it, I think consoles are going to end up being the lead from now on. It’s good news for console gamers who want stuff tailor-made for them, but for pc users that have beasty machines and want their games to take full advantage, it sorta sucks.

“I think consoles are going to end up being the lead from now on.”

How do you figure that exactly? IIRC BC2′s PC Sales ended up beating out the Console ones, and they developed for PC + Console side-by-side. DICE has said that developing for PC first gives them an edge, why would they sacrifice that edge?

Why would they give up that edge? Because they already did with BF3. Dice has already admitted that PC was NOT the lead. I’m making a very small point that people seem to really not like, understandably. Some seem to be in denial though too. PC was not the lead for BF3; all I’m saying is given how strong the console sales are, Dice will probably continue to develop future games on consoles as lead.

It’s not like I’m saying the PC version sucks; it’s awesome. And I’m not guessing that consoles were the lead for BF3; Dice already admitted they were the lead. So that’s not really up for debate. Lesson seems to be that you can lead on console and still make a great PC game. Just saying enthusiasts of the PC variety won’t like that news too much. And you can bet EA will push for console lead development after crunching these numbers.

It never ceases to amaze me how Fanboys mis-understand everything, or maybe just twist it on purpose to suit their own needs. Or idk, maybe you’re really that stupid. If anything though, you’re definitely in denial. Try re-reading the Article, and this time, don’t stop half-way through, or disregard what doesn’t suit your Fanboy-ism.

DICE gave up the edge because they didn’t have enough time. They clearly said so. Or did your Fanboy Brain disregard that part in an attempt to gain more Epeen? EA wanted to get this out before MW3 in a desperate attempt to steal some Sales from it. If they had the choice, they’d have more than willingly stayed with PC Lead if they could, as it was before.

“And you can bet EA will push for console lead development after crunching these numbers.”

You’re throwing around assumptions with over 1 Million un-accounted for Sales. Could you get any more horrible at this?

Here’s some actual facts on the other hand: EA/DICE released Beta Stats, over 8.1 Million Users. And yet, in 1st Week Sales, only 5 Million. So here’s my question to EA’s Bullshit Beta – Where’d those other 3 Million go? There’s no way those 3 Million all represent Medal of Honor Pre-Orders who tried the Beta but didn’t end up buying BF3. EA’s CoD Wanna-Be Beta actually pushed people to cancel their Pre-Orders. They want good Sales so badly? Then they should back off of DICE and let them do their own thing. Big time, and since you seem to be keen on making up your own Facts, here’s some real Facts: DICE LOVES PC-Lead, and if given the opportunity, they will ALWAYS go PC Lead. So troll on.

The fact that it wasn’t even on Steam didn’t exactly help matters either, with EA Calculating 100K Sales lost from the lack of Steam. Fanboys at work once again…. Also, since you seem to have ignored this as well, as someone pointed out in an older Article, while BC2 originally sold more on Consoles, over time, the PC Sales overtook the Console Numbers. Yeah, Console Lead. Keep dreaming.

I don’t know what you’re even disagreeing about. Nor do I understand what kind of fanboyism you’re accusing me of. Nothing I’ve said is bias. Sure they ran out of time; and that’s why they originally put consoles as lead for BF3. And?

With the very strong sales of consoles I think they’ll end up continuing this way of lead developing EVEN IF PC sales end up more than consoles. I’m not even saying PC won’t pass consoles. They may. So what? Console sales are strong enough I think DICE will end up, even if pushed by EA because publishers like efficient release dates, putting consoles as lead.

Not sure why you’re sooooo upset over just an opinion on what I think DICE will do for future games based on very strong console sales.

“and that’s why they originally put consoles as lead for BF3. ”
You don’t even understand what you’re reading. Its amazing. They didn’t plan this originally. They started on PC, originally, it was all on PC. Then, at some point in the middle of it all, they found out they didn’t have enough time, so they switched to Console Lead. You really didn’t read the Article, or the Quote did you? Amazing.

So, first you say “And you can bet EA will push for console lead development after crunching these numbers.” Then you say “With the very strong sales of consoles I think they’ll end up continuing this way of lead developing EVEN IF PC sales end up more than consoles.”

Really? So where’s the reasoning in that? PC Sells more in the Long-Term, but its the worse choice for Lead because, what? Console sells more in the 1st Week? As I already said above, apparently you didn’t read that bit – EA has to back off DICE, a lot. They bombed the Beta, they caused obvious massive Pre-Order losses with their CoD Wanna-Be. If anything, EA should do what Publishers used to do before they started buying out and Money Milking every Studio they could – get back to Publishing, not trying, and failing, pathetically, at Developing.

“based on very strong console sales.”
Based on Week 1 Sales who’s Platform Sales Numbers aren’t even complete. Now what do you think EA cares more about, weak Week 1 Sales, or strong Long-Term Sales, which will overall generate more profits for them to line their thickly padded pockets with?

Hehe settle down. Take a pill. I know console lead wasn’t their plan originally. They switch because of wanting to hit a release date. That will only be pushed more in the future by their publisher. The fact that consoles have had strong sales means this will only encourage it more. Not very hard to comprehend. (Consoles could stop selling copies at this point and still be considered strong sales. So I’ll grant you MUCH better PC sales. I’m guessing it still happens that consoles take lead in the future). Meeting release dates, which publishers push, and will continue to push now that consoles are doing very well and a success even if they sold zero copies from here on out, is enough of an edge, at least it was this time around. So I don’t see a reason to think they’ll give up THAT edge. They may of course, but i’m thinking the strong console sales enourage that.

Is that really such a butt hurt issue for you?

Apparently that really hits a nerve with you.

Once again, you seem to have missed the point. EA bombed Battlefield 3 sales. Its obvious to anyone who looks closely. Of course, EA themselves might ignore this, since they’re Childish idiots, but who knows. DICE might just slap it in their face, in which case they might decide to let the actual Developers do the Developing.

Fact is, EA cares about what will get EA the most cash, and judging by BC2 Sales, PC will, in the long run, bring in the most Cash. Sure, in the Short-Run, Consoles might sell more, but what’s more tempting to EA, and EA’s Investors, a few Million Dollars made in the first week, or Double-Digit Millions made in the Long-Run? You do the math.

Investors like to see Quarterly Earnings. If PC brings in more Quarterly Earnings than Consoles, EA will prefer to shift Lead Platform Focus to PC, because the PC keeps their Quarterly Earnings high, which in turn keeps Investors coming in. If PC initially sells more, and then Consoles keep the Quarterly Earnings high, then EA will want to shift focus towards Consoles, which in turn will keep Investors investing. Its not just about what gets you the highest Week 1 Sales, Week 1 Sales only boost 1 Quarterly Earnings Report. If for the other 3 Quarters of the Year you have bad Quarterly Earnings Reports, then Investors won’t be interested in doing Long-Term Investments with your Company.

EA has made some ridiculously idiotic decisions with meddling in BF3 Developing, but they’re still a very large Corporation, bringing in huge profits, so I’m quite sure they must have been doing something right to keep themselves afloat all this time. Hopefully one day they’ll start to learn from their mistakes though, and hopefully they won’t parade the Week 1 Sales around as proof that their Marketing Strategy works, otherwise, goodbye BF4, hello BC4.

Sure, then someone could ask “Why is Console the primary focus of so many Studios then?” Because its easy money. Developing for Consoles is a lot easier than developing and supporting a PC Game. For one, the Hardware is all the same, so you just need to make sure it runs at 60 Frames and you’re set. Second, if the Game takes off, you can pump it full of 10$ DLCs and people will trip over themselves in their haste to get their hands on more content. All you need to do as the Dev Studio is sit back and profit, no need to worry about Fancy Graphics and stuff like DX11 Toolset. I’ll repeat myself – Tessellation + DX11 will hit Console Devs in the face like a Brick Wall when Next-Gen Consoles Launch. And its going to be hilarious.

Lighting/Shadows etc. are slightly worse on the Xbox, due to its slightly older Hardware. Massive Xbox sales not surprising though, Xbox Gamers have always leaned more towards FPSs, partly due to highly rated Xbox-Exclusive FPSs, or early Xbox Access to some Games. Gears of War – Xbox Exclusive, Halo – Xbox Exclusive since almost 10 years now, CoD – One month early access to all DLCs (although, I’m doubting that a majority of those Sales is CoD Switchovers). And I think I’m forgetting something.

1st the hack wasnt done by one teenager u retard and 2nd i find it funny that all u stupid retarded xbox a$$ clowns like to say xbox has better graphics. its been show and proven that ps3 has better graphics, the only reason xbox has better graphics on multiplatform game is becuase certain developers refuse to design their game to take control of ps3 power simply becuase its a bitch to do and takes up time so they design for xbox and then port it to ps3 which makes the ps3 version look (slightly) worse. i challenge you to name 1 and i mean 1 xbox exclusive game that has better graphics than uncharted 3 and gran turismo 5. Also 2 known facts are 1 that ps3 has blu ray . 2 it has games design specificaly to take control of 3d tech. its a 3d blu ray player and has a huge content base on 3d and has better apps. faster access to movies and has a full internet browser. also i havent seen any microsft 3dtv’s come out actually not even a microsoft HDtv. xbox is the past people only bought it becuase it was here first thats it.

Umm 500.000 on PC? Either this is a joke or many, many more didn’t buy the game because of Origin! Either way, without EA it would have outsold COD, but no, they had to do everything wrong. :(

I’m thinking the PC numbers are hugely underestimated, with most people getting the Game directly from Origin so as not to have to deal with Direct2Drive/GameStop/Whatever’s Store, and then in turn Origin.

Either way, it would have never outsold MW3, that was just an illusion EA created for themselves and for Investors. CoD’s Fanbase exploded with Blops, now all those Blops fans are tired, and they want something new. MW3. Just because EA tried to make some wanna-be CoD Switchover Game and we ended up with a Semi-BC3, doesn’t mean people are just going to drop CoD and go for BF3. They paraded the Game around as if it was a God, its a great game, but people who consider CoD to be God aren’t about to drop the series because of fancy Trailers.

Them rushing the game so it could come out before MW3 and “affect” its Sales didn’t help issues much. Look how we ended up – Day 1 Patch adding features which were supposed to be in, massive Server Issues across all Platforms, bunch of Bugs/Issues (some even from Alpha, like Flashlights being more like Spotlights), horrible Rush Ported Maps, and latest discovery, they even had to switch Lead Platform.

Just like GTA and every other M game on the market, how much you want to bet a LOT of the people playing BF3 on consoles are under 17?

PC, I would say they bought it but might have stoped playing it due to battlelog being a hassle/facebook.

Console = Put in disc and play

PC = load up orign + log into battlelog website + “try” to find a server.

the casual player is going to take a console over PC for just being able to load it right up and NOT have to go thru 20 steps to connect to a mutiplayer game…

Also proven by how the majority of PC Sales are probably lacking from those numbers, since there’s no Origin Numbers.

Oh and yes PC is a more expensive platform, with better graphics, Not all of us live in our grandma’s basement rent free and can afford one. If you look at the targeted demographics for all three xbox 360′s target is the oldest 19-35.

Without Consoles more people would be buying the PC Version, meaning the PC Sales would overall be higher, they wouldn’t be broke however. Frostbite 2 might not look the same as it does, but they’d be far from broke, just as they were far from broke before they started developing for Consoles.

If you really think that, going by your “theory,” DICE would have gone broke soon after developing BF 2142, since they’d have (probably) not done BC1/2, and gone straight ahead to BF3, which we would have probably gotten 1-ish year ago, and we’d be playing the Expansion Packs for it right now, right? Just think before you type. Seriously.

Probably depends on whether EA would have still bought out DICE. Guess in the end EA is a necessary nuisance for better Quality Battlefield Games in the end… :(

Alternatively EA could have still bought out DICE, but they’d have licensed Unreal Engine 3 or CryEngine 3 and modified that to suit their needs instead (Destruction etc). But yeah, high BC Series Sales are what convinced EA to give DICE such a big Budget for Frostbite 2, pretty sure.

Okay so you think it costs the same to develop battlefield 3 as the 6-year old battlefield 2? Also, without console profits battlefield 3 would have a shit marketing campaign and even LESS people would buy it. And I bet all my money EA would cut off DICE if they tried making a pc only game. I hate to say it but there is little reason for most developers to make games for pc at all. Gears of War 3, for example, would lose money if it came out for pc because Microsoft pays them extra to keep it off their own operating system.

You seem to be misunderstanding something. Microsoft isn’t paying Epic Games to keep the Game off PCs. Its paying them to keep it off PS3. They tried GoW on Windows, I tried it too. It sucked. That’s why they never made GoW 2/GoW 3 for PC. They tried it, it sucked, they moved on. They didn’t tank the PC Market with another crappy Port, which I’m actually grateful for.

Battlefield 3 never needed a Marketing Campaign. What it needed, and still needs, is for EA to shut up and get back to Publishing, rather than Dick-Tating how to Develop a Game which nobody asked for, a BC3 Wanna-Be.

          Alternate Universe Theory:
DICE doesn’t sell out to EA. DICE goes from BF2142 to BF3. They design the Refractor 3 Engine, or the Frostbite 1 Engine, whatever you want. Graphics Quality is somewhere between Frostbite 1 (BC1) and Frostbite 1.5 (BC2). Smaller budget since they didn’t get any of the income from BC1/2 and the Console Port of BF2 + 1943. Biggest loss is obviously from BC2, which sold over 10 Million Copies.

Gameplay Quality however, is fantastic. Amazing. Unbelievable. Rivals and beats Battlefield 2′s. It pounds it down into mush. It has no competition. Its not a CoD Switchover Game waiting to be pumped full of DLCs. Its not some Semi-BC3 Game, its Battlefield 3. A true successor to Battlefield 2. And it came out last year. Right now, we’d be rolling around in the 1st, possibly 2nd Expansion Pack while possibly even waiting on the 3rd. We’d be laughing at CoD Fanboys and their overpriced DLCs. We’d be laughing at MW3. We wouldn’t have a Battlefield Failbook which nobody ever asked for, we wouldn’t have annoying Origin “Spyware” running in the background. No. We’d have grabbed the game from Steam, and we’d be laughing, mocking EA’s crappy Origin which would be bound to fail. While sure, Origin would still feature Battlefield 3, since EA would still be Publishing BF3, they’d have no Legal Basis to keep BF3 off of Steam, that decision would be entirely up to DICE.

Did I mention how the Launch wouldn’t be plagued by a rushed Launch because the Publisher who bought out the Studio wanted to get it out before the next CoD Game? And how the Beta doesn’t have Operation Metro on Rush Mode to entice all the CoD Gamers to switch over? Actually, how it probably has no Rush Mode at all, rather, maybe something Classic instead – Capture the Flag. Or, did I mention how the Game would survive for ages past the Expansion Packs, since it would have Mod Tools, and an active, huge Modding Community, rather than 6 months of “Aggressive DLCs”?

And next year/year after, we’d get Battlefield 4. Rocking Frostbite 2-2.5 Level Graphics. Because the Game attracts all sorts of people. Everyone wants it. And there wouldn’t be as many Console Fanboys and Publishers screaming at the top of their Lungs to anyone who’d listen about how “PC Gaming is Dead” bla bla bla.

But who knows. Maybe even in this Alternate Universe it does have a Console Port. Maybe BC2 does happen, and BF3 works across all 3 Platforms, with Frostbite 2 level Graphics, and PC always being Lead in Development. Maybe its not rushed through Development because the Publisher who did/didn’t buy out the Studio is pushing it through, damn whether or not its done, in some desperate pathetic and stupid attempt to re-route MW3 Sales.

Or maybe in another Alternate Universe EA buys out DICE, and actually lets them make their own Games, without interference, as long as they work fine on PC/PS3/Xbox 360. No interference, no nothing.

I personally don’t give a flying fuck whether or not its on Consoles or not, as long as they don’t throw in Cross-Platform Gameplay. Long as the Console Communities stay away from me, I don’t care if DICE makes a BF for Consoles. What I do care is that EA has succeeded in Tanking BF3. 8.1 Million Beta Users, 5 Million Sales in the 1st Week. What, 3 Million Medal of Honor Pre-Orders didn’t like the Beta? No. EA’s Beta managed to actually make people Cancel their Pre-Orders.

I started my Battlefield experience on PC with BF1942, BF2, BF2142. Moved to console (360) for all the others when money didn’t allow pc gaming to continue, and my experience has has ALWAYS been this: Battlefield is fun. Regardless of platform, I’ve always enjoyed it. Why do we continue to worry about who is having the most fun between platforms? Its what you make of it.

Yeah, REAL talk. Played em too on PC, then had to buy a Xbox, cause i thought every friend of mine have it and console gaming is better. Nah.. after 1 ½ year now, i really prefer PC, even I still play on Xbox. Ok, the graphics are fine, but when you look at PC gameplay.. man you dream about great gaming rig, and you can even play with controllers/joysticks on PC! But the gameplay is the most important thing about BF so I have to be satisfied for it on Xbox, and yeah it’s awesome on consoles 2 ! But ye, getting a gaming rig in a half a year! now lets end this xbox vs ps3 vs pc war, and lets concentrate on BF3!

People who own consoles generally buy games retail because you can’t digitally buy most console games. Regardless of age hard retail sales don’t make much sense without the bigger picture of digital sales.

So obviously all the sales of Xbox/PS are retail sales and none digital, whereas PC is a mix of both, maybe more digital. I never buy an actual hard copy of a PC game now-a-days with Steam, D2D, and sadly Origin. Too lazy to do that.

Sales are sales, should get Dice working on the future DLC packs that I’m sure PC and Console players alike will be buying.

The game may look better on the PC and the online community may not be snot nosed kids (due to how costly it is to keep upgrading your PC to look so good), but what can you say? More people own Xbox. I have a Ps3 and 360 and bought it for the 360 due to the bigger online community. I highly recommend you stop with the Platform wars bullcrap because the ps3 and xbox are the same shit. To be honest the ps3 might have the edge just because the online is free, but like i said, more people play xbox. maybe because it was cheaper back in the day than the ps3.. who knows. Just stop bitching about what system it’s better for and play the game.

I always thought highly rated Xbox-Exclusive FPS Series brought more FPS Gamers to the Xbox. That, and the CoD 1-Month Exclusive, although I doubt we’ve had that many CoD Switchovers. I mean Games like the Gears of War Series, the Halo Series, and I think I’m forgetting one.

Bioshock and the gears series is what really made me come to the xbox. you’re also forgetting left4dead. but that isn’t pvp. As for people switching for CoD exclusives.. i kinda doubt that. CoD will get burnt out just as the halo series did. (for me anyways) The “fanboys” will keep coming back and the people that look for newer and better fps games will go for games like battlefield and the ps3 exclusive MAG. (which i thought would be a bigger better Battlefield, and it really wasn’t.)

Yeah, Bioshock had the usually Trinity (XBox/PS3/PC) while L4D had PC/OS X/Xbox 360. Those two probably didn’t attract as many people as Xbox-Exclusives, but they probably did attract some new Gamers.

RIFT was supposed to be a WoW Clone from the beginning. While it didn’t attract the (what is it now?) 10 Million-ish(?) WoW Gamers, it did attract a fair bunch. Its like, WoW, but improved.

MAG was…. Different. Not a favorite, but non the less, not “Terri-Bad” either.

Even tho he is a troll, most “main stream” devs have pretty much turned away from the PC and went to consoles. look at crysis and all the other games. Can’t really recall the last time we got a true PC game from a major dev.

It’s mainly indie now. It’s not a BAD thing, but I still don’t get why they are not trying to push the industry forward, instead of staying in place. (other than the money being in consoles)

Arguably BC2, since it was Developed side-by-side for PCs and Consoles. Otherwise, yeah, mostly just Small-Time Titles. Crytek’s move to Consoles Lead for Crysis 2 was just pathetic. Its like “Thanks for the Sales Numbers PC Gamers, now piss off.”

Far as not trying to push the Industry forward, that’s simple. Consoles not been upgraded yet, so they focus on “improving” Gameplay instead. Then when the new Consoles come out, they jump the gun with a big new fancy Engine (Unreal Engine 4/CryEngine 4/) and Develop with that until the next Console Generation. Well, most Studios do that anyway. Right now, Engines are just about Maxed on these Consoles anyway so even if they wanted to dish the next ones out before, they’d be pointless.

Since Consoles have less Piracy Issues (Plus Overall easier to Develop for. When’s the last time you heard of High-Res Texture Packs on a Console Game, excluding BF3? For example.), its an Easy-Money Market. Throw out a DLC for 5-10 Bucks once in a while on PSN/Xbox Live, people snap it up like Hungry Dogs to Meat, even though they’ll whine and complain about it first. Devs don’t even need to worry about stuff like DX11 Tessellation when it comes to the PC Version, since everyone just goes “Well, its Lead Console…..” Only reason Crysis 2 got DX11 is because people raged. Hard. Thankfully they at least had the decency to do it right. Damn, Tessellation is going to hit Console Devs hard when the Xbox 720/PS4 hit the Markets. Very hard.

DICE gets it. Other Studios, not so much. Or they just don’t care. Develop for PC, Port to Console, you have a much wider selection of options. You can do things differently, better even. Of course, it costs more. Its also more work. When its PC Lead these days, people expect more. If you disappoint, they’ll hang you with a Noose.

Activision/Infinity Ward still make a PC Version of CoD, but beyond making sure it actually Ships, the Support is ridiculously bad. They just don’t care. Mod Tools? Sure, no problem. After all, they’re right there, made by id Software ages ago for the Quake 3 Modding Community. Another excuse not to Support the game, let the Modding Community make the Fixes. I’m surprised MW3 will have Mod Tools, since they’re not using a modified id Tech 3 Engine anymore. But then again, why am I? Excuse not to Patch PC-Exclusive Issues after all. Unranked Dedicated Servers. Another Slap in the PC Face. On and on.

You have to understand that just because something sells more or less doesnt make it better or worse. And even if origin sales werent accounted for yet, they still probably wont top console sales. And even if they were it doesnt matter.

Console is the lead platform not because BF3 miiight sell more on it, but because every Call of Duty quadruples the sales on console that bf3 does on PC. So even if PC sells maybe the same amount as bf3 tiltles as consoles does. COD is still making 4x as much money. THAT is why console is lead, because there are just more people playing on consoles than on PC only. So like many other products that sell the most (iphones, toyotas, etc) they must cater to the masses if they want the most profits.

No one can argue PC isnt more pwoerful than console. But there are a lot more toyota camry’s on the road than there are feraris.

The basic flaw in the Neumann architecture also makes PCs only improve marginally over the years. Of course the Processor and Graphics cards improve, but the bridge speed does not improve to keep up with them. It’s why a 6 year old console can adequately compete with a newer PC, because the bridge speeds are still quite close.

Really? How interesting. Because I was just reading an article yesterday about how the upcoming AMD Radeon HD 7970 Single-GPU Card’s Power boost will make it comparable to the previous (current) Generation’s AMD Radeon HD 6990 Dual-GPU Card’s Power.

Did I mention how in the last SIX Years, CPUs have gone from 1.x GHz with crappy Overclocking to Unlocked Multipliers with a (just 3 days ago set) World Record of 8.5 GHz with AMD’s latest APU? Intel’s Sandy Bridge alone can maintain 4GHz on Air Cooling, and its about to get better this upcoming year too.

I’m curious as to how all that works in with your “Minimal Upgrades” Theory. Here’s a better example: Frostbite 2 can barely run on Consoles. CryEngine 3 still can. Unreal Engine 3.5 at full power – possibly. Bring Frostbite 3 into the picture now. How well do you think that’ll run on Consoles? 240p with 15 FPS? Nice Gameplay there. CryEngine 4? 30 FPS 480/720p? How about Unreal Engine 4? 30 FPS 480/720p?

What do you think the Industry is waiting around for? New Consoles. PCs could easily run those in a year or two, Max Settings with SLi/CrossFire. Consoles on the other hand, would crash and burn.

The reason Consoles can “play” reduced versions of Graphics Intensive Games these days is because Developers find ways to reduce the Pixel Count, not because Hardware Progression is too slow, which it most certainly is not, or because its Hardware is “special”. It used to be special. Now its just badly outdated to the point that it holds the entire industry back. Sony’s Cell Tech. isn’t going to last 10 years, that’s just ignorance to still be throwing that around 6 years later in the face of PCs 5-10 times stronger than the PS3. Thankfully they’re working on a PS4.

Well, CryEngine 3 just came out with Crysis 2 earlier this year, meaning 2-3 years for CryEngine 4/Crysis 3 Development. Unreal Engine 4 is scheduled for 2014-ish (Unreal Tournament 4?), and Frostbite 2 just came out with Battlefield 3, so that gives them 2-3 years for Frostbite 3 to launch with Battlefield 4, they’ll probably take around 3 years. far as the other Engines, there’s no Source 2 due any time soon, id Software will probably start working on id Tech 6 after Doom 4 so that’s probably 3-4 years away, possibly 5 if they want to launch a Game with it as they did with id Tech 5 and RAGE.

Xbox 720 is rumored for an E3 2013 Announcement with a late 2013/early 2014 Launch, and Sony wants to get the PS4 out ahead of the new Xbox so that’s probably coming around idk, mid 2013 maybe.

Of course, if Windows (8) Metro throws us DX12 instead of the rumored DX11.1, that’ll mean a whole new Toolkit of goodies for Developers to incorporate into their Engines, and learn to play with as well. Lot of factors to consider, however overall I’d say new Generation of Engines could very well come out around the new Console Releases, with Major Title Releases (Crysis 3/BF4/UT4?) to follow just a few months later, possibly sooner/later depending on if Studios get Pre-Release Console access, how fast the Engine Coding gets done, etc. etc. etc.

For sure, Studios are waiting on those though. Well, that and Windows Metro DirectX revelations.

I’m rather disappointed, as a PC gamer, that the platform I play on sold the least copies of BF3, because it means less players I can play with.

I used to play Quake 3, Unreal and then Quake Live during the years, but it’s clear people aren’t interested in arcade-style jump-around-and-shoot-with-all-sorts-of-awesome-weapons-of-mass-destruction games anymore, so I switched over to MW2. Lots of people play it on Steam, but sadly, I wasn’t aware back then, that Activision was neglecting the PC community so hard.

After some 200+ hours, I put MW2 down and went over to BC2. It was awesome. About the same amount of people playing it as MW2, but with better support and a better experience. I thought BF3 would be groundbreaking as a successor to BF2 – which I have never played – and for me, I think it was well worth pre-ordering.

Unfortunately, there are still a good few bugs which need to be sorted out on PC, but I only play TDM nowadays, so I’m not affected that much. I can only hope, that once the digital purchases are counted into the stats, we’ll see a sharp rise in just how many people actually bought BF3 for the PC, because if they didn’t…they don’t know what they’re missing out on!

A few things you need to remember about PC sales, and how many you get to play with, since this is a pretty demanding game, and we haven’t really had a reason to upgrade our computers for the last what? 4-5 years due to consoles holding it back, then BF3 was released, and now we do have a reason to upgrade our computers for the first time in ages, people will do that then buy the game, on Digital Download of course, so nobody will see the numbers, then Dice get their mod tools done, then some awesome mods comes out, then more people buy the game, then we got the fact that a game on PC sell for ages compared to consoles, as PC gamers buy games at all times, and not just the first month it’s out. So, for us on PC, we’ll see more and more gamers to play with, and hopefully, when MW3 comes out, a lot go away, since I’m noticing a lot of MW mentality in the game atm. omg, your camping as one example.
