Strike At Karkand

The latest Battlefield 3 trailer gave us a glimpse of Strike At Karkand, one of the Back To Karkand maps, but what you may have missed is that the trailer included a few frames of the map without destruction, and a few with full destruction. We’ve extracted those from the trailer so you can see for yourself on the image above (and make sure to check out the high-res version).

You really think they got 100% destructible buildings in multiplayer?

      Balance > realism.

Still tough , even *shivers* BC2 had 2 story buildings you could demolish :D

But yarr not everything -should- be destructible , that would be too much :P

Not really, they don’t. BF3 actually has surprisingly low res textures. It is just that most power goes to effects.

Well it seems like everyone is being super hyped because of this picture because damn it looks good. The after looks like a real war scene. THIS PIC IS WRONG though. DICE stated that the rubble would not stay in place. On all the BF3 news site I’ve seen this pic on, not a single site mentioned that.

Well in the video Mutiplayer at that, they shown a whole building crumbling too the ground…so yea I think.plus a few of the buildings in Bad company(even tho I hated that one) had a few building models that can be destroyed.

Yeah but those were just stand-alone houses for the most part… This is an densly contructed urban street whose facade is basically ripped to shreds.

I think that is liable at some point down the line. However, that would mean having them fall down realistically, rather than straight down like in BC2, and so negate balance issues (i.e. people hiding in them like in bunkers). So it would take some time to develop.

“Why no destructible buildings” bugged me at first too since it was cool in BFBC2, but DICE claimed the ability to turn an entire city to rubble had too great a performance penalty.

And really, if you think about urban firefights, most units aren’t playing demolition crew demolishing entire buildings in the heat of battle, you’ll see a building face ripped open here or there but not absolute rubble unless its airforce doing heavy bombing.

I’m sure they wanted to give it to us, maybe we’ll seee it in FB 3.0, on next gen consoles and PC video cards.

Dude, you cant break each map by dropping the entire buildings, that wouldnt make sense

Even in BFBC2 each bldg imploded in place

100% destruction just means the defense could bury every obj under rubble and win the round

Wow, it looks like an improvement over BC2′s destruction. (There will be buildings which collapse, watch the trailer)
It looks far more “realistic”, imo.

And it’s not realistic to level a whole city to the ground. Look at WWII for example, there were still a lot of houses standing or only half collapsed.

      How CoD maps are created:

      1. Take a small infantry map and throw it into Battlefield.
      2. After a match take the remains, shrink them even more, add invisible borders.
      3. Put into Call of Duty.

It looks better, IMO. It’s unrealistic that huge buildings can collapse when being shot at by AP rounds. And if you watch the trailer you’ll see that there’ll still be buildings which will collapse after a certain amount of damage, just more realistic than BC2 had it.

Your use of the term ‘unrealistic’ is greatly flawed.

You can very much destroy an entire building with AP rounds. It would just take significantly more of them than using HE’s. It’s a simple matter of physics and dealing sufficient damage to supporting walls and structures.

The reason they removed the ability to completely destroy some (most?) buildings was for gameplay reasons, certainly not for the sake of ‘realism’. I tend to agree with their decision on the whole, as having zero standing buildings would suck for infantry trying to get through an area. It’s just a matter of time now to see whether or not the actual implementation is done well. The pics shown are impressive and certainly make it look like they’ve got it right.

I can see the “gameplay reasons” explanation to an extent, but I never had any problem with too many destroyed buildings in BC2.

But hey, so long as I can kill someone who thinks they are safe with an RPG, I’ll be happy whether the building is still standing or not! :D (by far one of the most satisfying gaming moments)

I recall one of the BF3 producers mentioning in a video that multiplayer will have partial destruction, meaning the facades, but will not be able to completely topple a large building like in the single player side. If thats still the case that sucks.. but then again, when youre playing and you know some a$$hole is just roaring down the road with a tank ONLY to topple a building simply because it can kinda makes it gay.
