BF3 soldiers
Over the past few months, DICE has expertly dodged questions whether PC gamers will be able to create several soldiers per Origin account in Battlefield 3. During the beta, we saw there was “room” for multiple solders on Battlelog, and we’ve heard conflicting news whether we’ll be able to create multiple soldiers. However, according to DICE, those “slots” are for console accounts, meaning that you cannot create a new solder on PC, but if you play Battlefield 3 on a console, you can add your console soldier (e.g. via Xbox Live Gamertag), and track the stats in Battlelog. This is according to DICE’s Daniel Matros, who tweeted the news.

Not only that, it’s been confirmed (again, via Matro’s Twitter) that your name in Battlelog is your Origin username, which will also be the name of your soldier, presumably. What makes this situation worse, is that players cannot change their Origin account name via the settings, instead, they have to contact EA tech support and request a name change. Which sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t.

We dunno what else to say other than we’re disappointed over this, especially if all of Mr. Matros’ Tweets turn out to be true. The integration between Origin, Battlelog and Battlefield 3 has taken a step too far, slashing away features that PC gamers have enjoyed for years. Simple features like creating different soldiers and choosing your in-game name.

Not to mention that since your Origin username is publicly displayed, it’s a potential security risk as would-be hackers now only have to guess the password. Other services, like Steam, don’t publicly display the username/login name of the account.

Yeah, but I still wonder how it is for PS3 players.

*1 game for each PSN-ID even on same console
(PSN-ID = Soldier #1, If you want to create a new soldier. buy another BF3)?

      OR is it…

*Multiple accounts can play BF3 on same PS3
      (New PSN-ID = New Soldier)?

The online pass actually downloads to your console and unlocks all the accounts on the console. In other words, no, you won’t need to purchase an online pass for other accounts. Now, let’s say for example one of those accounts belongs to your brother, and he eventually gets his own PS3, he’ll need to either buy a new copy of BF3, or a used copy and get the Online Pass since the pass is associated with whatever account was used to purchase it (if you’re smart, you activated the pass on your account instead of letting another user do it on theirs). Granted, you could log into your account on your brother’s new PS3 and install the online pass through your account, but I think that will deactivate your PS3.

I was reading on the EA UK Battlefield 3 forums and someone posted about changing your Origin ID, and to my surprise it actually worked. Here’s how to do it, requires that you have an iPhone or Android phone.

You have to install EA’s “Scrabble Free” app from the market. Once installed you can go to Options (The cog looking icon at the bottom), Click Log in to the right (use Origin email and password), then you can go back to the Options screen and clcik “Edit Account” and enter your new ID to get the Save button to work I had to enter my password for the New password fields, idk why.

Unfortunately it seems Scrabble Free isn’t available World-Wide, as I just found out, since all I got for Search Results was “Scrabble Tile Rack” (This is just some sort of iPad Connect and Play thing) and Scrabble 1,59 Euro (which is the Pay version).

1,59 not being much, still kinda sucks. Ah well, just pointing that out to anyone else who can’t find “Scrabble Free” on iOS.

Pc players seem to always forget that the difference between DICE and EA’s actions, EA makes all the decisions and wants you to pay more and make using Origin mandatory since BF3 is one of the few EA titles we want. However they’ll still getting 64 players and 1080p graphics which were dice’s decision, I’m pretty sure if Dice leaves EA and goes back to being independent than we’ll have much greater titles and even more features for each individual platform.

EA would never let DICE go, they make too much money off them. Plus, the buyout price would be huge in the first place.

          October 14th, 2011 at 6:10 pm

…EA would never let go of DICE, especially since the bond is rather strong. You see, BF1942 is still the best BF game cause by that time, EA simply just did the publishing, without too much twinkering DICE’s actions.

However, the “Lets fuck off”-scenario would be much similiar to any other scenario in, lets say industrial field. All the workforce needs to do, is simplu refuse working and walk out of the factory. So they get fired and the employer gets replacements. The difference in here is, that DICE is one of the few workforces that knows, how larger scale infantry+vehicles combat is *properly done* to satisfy a large pool of users simultaneously. If DICE ever decides to walk out, EA would indeed truly, really be fucked, because it’s difficult, if not impossible to find a replacing workforce.

I’m getting a Deja Vu vibe from this, we discussed this before? :O (No, seriously…)

DICE currently employees 280+ people, possibly 300 by the end of the year. Getting all of them to walk out would be rather hard. Its been done before, sure. Take Infinity Ward for example. One of the Heads had some sort of argument with Activision or something, then quit. Most of the Staff followed him. They formed a new Studio, their first Project already in development (IIRC this happened quite a while ago).

They detailed how starting over was hard. They basically had nothing. No fancy hardware, they didn’t even have an office, was just chairs in a circle in the beginning. Unless Carl Magnus or Bach quit, I doubt the Staff would follow. And even then, I’d say only the long-term loyal ones would. Stockholm is an expensive City to live in. Throwing your savings into a new Studio’s Project, a Studio which would probably want to design its own In-House Engine expanding Development time to around 5 years, is a ridiculously big risk.

Then there’s the fact that their Stockholm Studio was built 2-3 years ago, its basically brand new. They’ve got a load of hardware there, loads of expensive tech required for tech. development etc. Sure, this might not be a major factor. Who knows.

Also, even if they all did decide to quit and make a new Studio, there’s the fact that doing that means they’d probably also forfeit all rights to ever make another Battlefield title again. EA owns DICE, meaning EA owns the Battlefield franchise. They’d have to start over, new series. Totally different everything so they can’t be sued for copying/stealing code or whatever. No more Frostbite Engine, completely different Gameplay, bla bla bla. EA would probably sue just out of spite. American Corps are Sue-Happy these days.

Then, there’s also the problem that EA might even refuse to publish their Games, other biggest option left on the table is Activision, which out of the two, is worse (for now anyway). Unlikely of course, since they’d lose out on cash, but who knows. They are rather childish at times after all.

…But please note I never argued against your point. But when looking at times like these where EA has managed to make nothing but bad decisions, it wouldn’t be surprise IF DICE ever says “OK, that’s it! I had enough.”

P.S. I remember time when EA didn’t make THAT bad choices and simply did the marketing and publishing.

Yeah, Publishers used to just Publish Games. Then they figured out they could make more Profit by buying out the Studios and controlling the Development for themselves, along with securing that any future Games Developed would automatically be published by them. DLCs didn't exactly help matters either.

Easy to say, not so easy to do. Triple-A Game Budget in today’s Market runs into 10 Million + Dollars. For Indies, that’s 2 years of minimum wage since all their savings get dumped into the project. That’s 2 years assuming you’re using a Licensed Engine. Average of 5 if you’re making your own, and if you’re not using a Major Publisher, good luck. That’s all assuming the project doesn’t crash and burn mid-way through Development. Then, you’ve wasted most/all of your money on a failed Project.

BongMan, been smoking too many Bongs?

Most of the Flame Wars on here that I see are started by Console Players. Granted, PC “Elitists” have started some, but its usually some paranoid teenager mis-understanding a comment and starting an Epeen War.

PC Players complain because we’re not even getting something as simple as a Game Menu, its been completely replaced by Battlelog. We complain because we have a fucking DRM called Origin + Battlelog. Did you know we can’t even play the Campaign without logging into Battlelog first? No? Hm. And yet, you Console Fanboys bitch about us complaining too much.

How would you all feel if you had to open your Sony/Microsoft Console Browser, log into Battlelog, and then launch Battlefield 3 from there, all on your PS3s or Xbox 360s?

      You’re getting everything we want:
      - Game Menu
      - In-Game Server Listing
      - (Most likely) In-Game VOIP (Yeah, we need to use Battlelog for this too)

So yeah, we complain. Because EA/DICE or whoever decides this shit is hammering Failbook for Battlefield up our asses with a sledgehammer, possibly simply because of Call of Duty Elite. I don’t like Failbook, I hate it, so why the fuck would I ever want to even TOUCH Battlelog? I wouldn’t, and yet, I don’t have a choice if I want to play Battlefield 3.

And now they found another Milking Method. 1 Character Per-Account. That means you shell out 60$ to play everything on a single Character. I personally don’t care, not planning to do Multi-Classes, but others will. And I do care when my Account Name will be displayed as my Character Name with no Options to change that.

In Conclusion: Console Fanboys: Stfu. You have it easy.

I’d take Joysticks and Comma Rose off the list for PC, they said there’d be a Day 1 Patch. Softpedia said BF3 went Gold a few days ago, so they have 2-3 weeks to do Comma Rose/Joysticks/Advanced Jet Options for PC and launch that with the Day 1 Patch.

Advanced Jet Options/Joysticks can’t be that hard, Comma Rose will probably take up some time.

          Far as Consoles:
          - Smaller Maps due to a Cap of 24 Players, Console Hardware limits
          - Lower Quality Textures due to Console’s older hardware, that comes with using one these days unfortunately.
          - CoD Switchovers will either Ragequit by themselves, get banned for Whining instead of Playing, or just get used to it and shut up.

So Consoles can’t use Joysticks after all… I always wondered :O

well, I would say that the 24 player limit on the console isn’t because of hardware limits, it’s because of the bandwith min. I know microsoft has a so called “limit” for there servers, since I’ve seen a few things posted here and there about devs for upcoming games (at the time) say this is the reason they can not add more players.

I have a feeling it was this more than hardware, but then again I stopped buying consoles after xbox1,ps2,gamecube because MS wanted to make me buy a new console……. and I do recall Xbox 1 having a required internet speed to even play on LIVE back in the day…

I love being able to go to battlelog and see who’s on and in what party and on what map without having to open anything but another tab. Sure now we can only have one character, but that character will reflect our actual skill over all games ever played, not just all the ones we took seriously. It’s a new dawn for Battlefield, and it doesn’t look half bad.

Btw I changed my name with the scrabble trick a couple days ago, works great.

Problem is, it eliminates Choice without first introducing Loss. I play as a Recon/Sniper. I always do, its what I like to do. Not because I like to Camp/Quick Scope, I just like it.

However, I have dabbled with the other Classes in previous Games. Over time, with a maxed Character, you end up getting bored, so you want to start over, try something new.

Now, you can’t do that. You need to lose all your Progress and start over fresh to try out a new Class. And if you don’t like it, you’re stuck without anything to fall back on. You’re back to point 0. Total re-set.

Unless you buy insurance. A second License. Another 60$, possibly more if you get the DLCs/Expansion Packs coming up too. Then you can play around there, but there’s still the fact that it costs 60$ in the first place.

It won’t necessarily reflect all skill though. Its not like we can’t delete it all together. Whoever cares about K/D Ratio will still start off with one, then when they’ve gotten used to it, dump it and start over again. Only difference for them is, saving their old Character isn’t optional anymore.

“all they have to do is guess my password”
Really?? Its that simple, i know your username so all i have to do is guess your password! If someone random can *guess* your password, when the only thing they know about you is your Origin username (which for many, could be their BF name anyway), then clearly you need to be using a better password.
Its a stupid system, dont get me wrong, but these over the top type statements just make you seem stupid rather than the process being stupid.

It’s called “brute force” hacking. It’s not really guessing, it’s more just using a computer program to test random combinations of letters and words thousands of times a minute untill they guess the password.

However if they don’t have access to your username they first have to guess a random username (not knowing whether it’s a valid one or not) then try and guess passwords for it.

Thousands of password guesses a minute? Three wrong guesses and you can’t log in for a set amount of time…

As well, emails, PSN and forum usernames, all these things are out in the open, and would in many cases be of worth once cracked, and it’s still not a simple matter of “just guess the password.”

what I’m wondering more is if Star Wars: The Old Republic’s “Custom Security Authentication Key”(it’s a keyfob like WoW’s) from the Collecters Ed. will tie to your origin account or just for that game. If it ties to your account, then it will be very unlikey that someone will be able to “hack” your account even if they knew the password as the code changes.

if that is indeed the case then the people who pre-orded SW:ToR’s LE and “BF3″ won’t have to worry about it too much. and why would someone want to hack your account in the 1st place? Unless you pissed them off that is….

I had people following me from and old clan from server to server on PC and harassing me because all they had to do was search the known name i had for origin before I had a falling out with them and EA wouldn’t even change my origin name. So when the game releases ill get hit with the same problem because of their forcing you to use your origin name.

Steam would make no difference in this case. Even if you buy the Game off of Steam rather than Origin, or any 3rd Party Online Store really, you’ll still need to use Origin.

And really, people don’t realize this, but Steam acts as a DRM itself. Its not as intrusive, but it still acts as a DRM to a certain extent.

Because even if you buy it from a 3rd Party Store, like say, Direct2Drive, you still need an Origin Account. You still need to Download the Origin Client, it still needs to run in the background.

Why would they make an exception of this for Steam? Other Online Stores would complain.

You should be changing up your class based on your squad mix, the situation your squad/team is/are in at that moment, and the overall game situation. Try it sometime.

I’ve got a theory… The reason we have to use battlelog every time we want to play, whether its single player or multiplayer, is because battlelog will eventually become covered in advertisements. This way, they get tons of money from advertisers because the website has so much traffic. Just a theory.

Many friends, you can have platoons, you can group join to servers, the game loads up in the background, instant stats updating, no fucking *updating stats* as fast as you leave a game or log in, no intros, forum is there

Completely agree. No need for Stats Verse or other third-party add-ons. Plus I can log in form anywhere, not just my gaming PC, and see what’s going on. It actually lowers the barrier of entry into the game, and it eliminates the need to hit the ESC key to skip the intro we all enjoy the first couple times then want to bypass by the fifth session.

The Battlelog idea isn’t half bad. Instead of grinding through streaming in a whole list of Servers for an In-Game Menu, you can Stream them all in through a simple Web Page.

The problem starts where they complicate things:
        - Plug-In Requirement
        - Battlelog isn’t just a Server Browser, its also a CoD Elite competitor, its Failbook for Battlefield
        - They removed the Game Menu for Battlelog, meaning they basically set a DRM. You can’t launch Campaign without logging into Battlelog, and that requires an Internet Connection, therefore DRM.
        - No In-Game VOIP, dumped in favor of Battlelog VOIP

        - One could say an issue with it is that it requires you to have a Browser Open, which consumes some RAM, and along with Origin they end up consuming a chunk, small/medium/big depending on how much RAM your Rig has.

If it was just a simple Server Browser people would probably easily get used to it. Its a fine idea, fine design. Problem is, they’ve overblown it, and I’m afraid they’re not going to understand this, meaning with whatever Game comes next (BC3/2143/BF4/whatever), they’ll either do the same thing/worse, or just go back to crappy In-Game Server Browsers.

Note: I agree on the Stats Checking bit, that part of it is nice. There have been Stats Checking Sites for ages, so now its like there’s an Official one for once. The Social Networking parts of Battlelog however are just totally un-necessary, they’re just CoD Elite competition. Difference is, CoD Elite you choose to use. Here, Battlelog isn’t an option.

This sucks, but the game was so damn fun to play on Beta most people are going to submit and play anyway.

I think it will cut down on cheating. Every name will be unique, and all games are logged. Perhaps the lack of accountability will bring a bit more order to the game servers.

Oh, and people need to use good passwords. Pa55W0rd does not cut it anymore.

There are other ways of cutting down on cheating. Just because your name in unique doesn’t mean you can’t cheat and vise versa.

I dont mind having one character, i agree it will help with cheating. If a hacker has his/her account banned, he will have to buy another copy if he still wants to play. I actually think its a good idea. They should just have an option to reset your stats, that way if you’re fully maxed out and bored, you could always start over.

that way, hackers from call of duty will be banned. which at least is a good thing.

This isn’t an Anti-Cheating Measure. If EA so much as wanted to they could find out which Account all of your 100+ Characters are associated with, Freeze that, and with it, all your 100+ Characters/Bots.

This Single-Character thing is a bid to get more Sales from people that like to play with more than 1 Character, and really, its pathetic.

Presumably, cheaters would get account-banned, or IP banned from particular servers. So having a restriction on soldier names wouldn’t help prevent cheating.
