There have been some unfortunate developments with EA Norway and the way they’ve been handling access to Battlefield 3 review copies. According to Norway’s top news outlet, NRK, EA has withheld review copies of Battlefield 3 to reviewers whom they thought would give the game a bad score. A number of Norwegian gaming outlets, including popular ones like, have been refused review copies of Battlefield 3 due to their review scores of past Battlefield games.

Furthermore, EA inquired potential reviewers of Battlefield 3 to see whether they were Call of Duty fans, whether they played the beta and if they were frustrated with the beta. You can see the full list of questions above.

EA’s actions in this case have been criticized by Norway’s top journalists, like Gunnar Bodahl-Johansen from Norway’s School of Journalism, calling EA’s actions “unacceptable”, adding, “It is a sad situation for both EA and game journalism that it appears that this is normal.”

EA has been quick to issue an apology, with EA Norway marketing manager Oliver Sveen saying “this should not have been sent out. We have made a mistake and we apologize. This is not something that neither should have happened earlier or what we intend to continue”.

Except it wasn’t very good journalism as Toshiro got the story somewhat wrong. It’s been abundantly clear that some of the Norwegian review sites have been in Activision’s back pocket given the disproportionately low reviews of BFBC2 relative to the average on metacritic. Something was going on.

Nevertheless this ‘questionnaire’ was a mistake on EA’s part, because the merits of BF3 really transcend ALL these review site politics. When we’re talking about BF3 its like Chuck Norris sending out a questionnaire “do you think I’m sexy” and “do you think I’m bad ass enough”. Would never happen.

Let everybody review it, whether the competition sent them a big advertisement check or not, because this time around the review sites DONT ACTUALLY MATTER. The word of mouth is off the charts like no game I’ve seen before. Forums full of “building a new BF3 rig”, “which monitor to get the most of out BF3, etc” Endless threads and chatter about BF3, not the competition. It is the new high watermark in gaming, and EA needs to figure this out.

its common practice, Nike do it, Adidas do it, Intel did it to amd and payed 6 billion for it, and actavision does it.
will journalism be a payed thing since today internet have made it clearly abundant that quality and truth seldom go hand in hand. For me, BF3 is a mw3 copy, the rush mode screams cod, the way they made the vehicles in game just is a tad wrong, the conquest mode works to a extent, but will see how the retail version is before making a final call.

I cant understand how they can make the avatar and not allow it to react to gunfire so the enemy has to adjust since you should be able to move sideways, that is what a soldier normally does under fire, moves from the fire. Its such a arcade adjusted game its sad. the ea buy out did have a bad effect imo.

You played cod series and mw series and bf series I assume?
Rush mode is a rip of cod/mw series, sure every developer steals ideas and use them since if its a great idea why not use it?
However, the buy from ea of dice has shown how they desire to take the crown from cod/mw and actavision to be the nr1 game of fps and to do so we get a game that is more similar than stand out from mw3.

Its evident in their decisions making, in how they execute decisions and what to make or not make into their game.
I log into the beta of BF3, and are met with confusing graphics and UI, not being able to lower the shadows due to high contrast giving me and others a headache, the lack of evading bullets trough going sideways, since it shows how evident arcade the game is made.

Its a rip off copy and clone to make a mw3 game if you ask me.
Their idea of game balance is at best a joke as far beta goes.
I can only hope for retail fixes a few things but he overall game design, wont.

I play with friends, so I don’t mind if the game design suck much, it just shows how to met the arcade kids market and the ea desire to become nr1 is driving their decision making which simply sucks for me as a customer and most likely for a lot of others and the esl sports market competition is gonna fail on PC. console who cares?

So, your Theory is that BF3 rips off MW3 (which in turn is a copy/paste of MW2 with “better” Graphics, which in turn is a copy/paste of CoD 4 with “better” Graphics, meaning you’re basically saying BF3 is a rip-off of CoD 4)?

And your evidence is Rush, a Mode which was introduced to Battlefield Multi-Player with I believe… Bad Company? I don’t play Console so I’m not quite aware if it was first introduced in the Bad Company Console-Exclusive or Bad Company 2. Either way, those were dumbed down compared to other Battlefield Games. General consensus between Battlefield Fans is that Conquest is where Battlefield truly shines, not Rush. Rush is simply Rush, something introduced with the BC Series when they were making the series more Mainstream.

Yes, I’ve played CS:S, BF Vietnam, BF2, BF 2142, Crysis, CoD 4, MW2, BC2, Crysis 2, and BF3 Beta. Among other, less relevant Titles. Yes, I’ve skipped the WW2 Titles, they’ve never been of interest to me.

“Confusing Graphics and UI” – I’m not sure what’s confusing about the UI. You’ve got Mini Map, Ammo, Heart Rate, Chat, and the “who killed who” thing. Its simplistic. If you want less, go Hardcore Mode, it removes almost the entire UI.

Far as the Graphics, there’s way more options than other Games because this isn’t the hundredth Console Ported PC Game released this year. Its developed on PC, and then ported to Console, so there’s a larger array of Settings. If Shadows don’t go low for some reason, its a Beta Bug. The Beta was crappy and filled with them, we know that, they know that, let’s get over that already. The Beta was simply to test Server Stability, the Build we were playing was massively outdated. Minimum System Requirements to play BF3 are a GT 8800/ATI Radeon 3xxx (or something) GPU. There’s really no reason for you to be having Graphics issues, unless you’re playing on some sort of PS2 level Hardware?

“Lack of Evading Bullets through going sideways”? Isn’t that just you moving, and the guy who’s shooting at you, still shooting at you? It doesn’t take much to kill someone if you actually hit them. Maybe you got hit with the One-Shot-Kill Beta Bug too.

I agree however, they HAVE made some ridiculously bad decisions with this Game (Battlelog shoved down our Throats with no In-Game VoIP, the Failbook Social Network part of it is just a ridiculous CoD Elite wanna-be competitor, KillCam (apparently we didn’t bitch enough about that with BC2, fortunately Hardcore Mode disables this) etc.). Yes, they have made this game more Mainstream. Not BC2 level Mainstream, but less Mainstream compared to BF2.

DICE said they’re aiming for a 95%+ Rating with Critics. That means #1 Priority is to eliminate Bugs. If there’s obvious Bugs, big Bugs, small Bugs, annoying Bugs, any type of Bug that they can come across what-so-ever, that 95%+ is gone, and at best they’ll get a 90%+. Of course, EA needs to get their heads out of their asses and make sure there’s no Server Issues (AGAIN) with this Launch too, so yeah….

And to complete my phrase… The first game which standarised this style, was clearly the “Doom”. After that game, everyone was just “Doom-like”. That was the name of the category. Not even “FPS”.

That being said, each game has some specific features that differentiates it from other.

Clearly, setting in Open Beta the “Metro” map, it was intended to atract new, possibly CoD players. The BF players bought the game already. Though, that doesn’t make the Rush mode copy of CoD.

It is just that EA is using its money spent on publicity in the form of trolling the rest of the gaming community, hoping its fanbase is going to follow suit, and so attracts CoD players’ attention.

Not that I think (hope) this is the case. Just seems like EA is acting a little bit douchey about a game that they’ve been projecting to be epic. Why screw with reviewers if the merchandise is gold?

Just had someone on FFXIV in my guild switch their 6970 Graphics card out for a nVidia 560 GTX due to AMD’s drivers.

When they got done they were relieved that the problems they were having with the 6970′s graphics were gone after he installed the GTX 560. Don’t make excuses for AMD’s rehab work.

Alot of people use the early drivers that come on disk with their gpu. This is not recommended because they are often early drivers that have bugs just like any other software. They need to download the updated drivers from the vendors website which will have the known bugs, glitches or crashes resolved. Both Nvidia and AMD/ATI have the same issues and not just them but any software building or engineering company will have unforeseen bugs that were missed during alpha testing and thats why we have beta testing. HAHA we are the beta testers and its up to us to report the issues so they can get resolved.

bad products can affect people’s stance on a company.

hmm i can see were ea are coming from with the “are you a cod fanboy?” review sites (not naming names) tend to give cod perfect scores without fail, whilst giving other games lower scores for things that are just bloody rediclous compared with the horrible copy paste, buggy, unbalanced games cod keeps coming out with

Pretty much. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn that most, if not all, publishers do this sort of thing occasionally.

I don’t blame EA, Game journalists/reviewers have been in the pocket of Activision/cod for so long, I wouldn’t want any mindless COD zombie reviewing my game either.

On the other hand EA should have nothing to fear as Battlefield’s quality will always shine through in the reviews.

maybe if there were more reputable gaming journalists out there instead of opinionated scumbags this wouldn’t happen.

At least Activision doesn’t do stupid shit like that although i fucking hate both publishers. Dice should publish their games themselves unless they have a contract with EA or something.

EA bought DICE witch means that DICE cant just get out and leave that would be breach of contract

It surprises me over and over that some of you people actually keep siding with EA when they time after time show their true, ugly faces. In your post, you’re actually apologizing on their behalf for this unacceptable behaviour masking it as just an attempt of honest marketing strategy!

Why anybody would think it okay to manipulate the reviews like this is beyond me. The only explanation I can think of, is that many in the gaming community get so attached to the game, wanting it to succeed, that they lose their common sense. That’s fanboyism for you, allright.

It’s people just accepting such behaviour by either not caring or justifying it through such fanboyism who let these companies keep on doing what eventually will hurt all customers. Compulsory installation of Origin with it’s EULA is another such issue which by being rotten to it’s core hurts the whole community in the long run.

This is the last straw, EA keeps fucking Dice and it really effects the game. this event alone is going to give reviewers -0.1 score, gee thanks Ea you took 0.1 out of the perfect 10 bf3 will have, don’t be surprise if bf3 gets 9.9 for this.
Theres a list of shit Ea has done that keeps degrading Bf3!
1.Making Origin madatory and having 1 soldier.
2.Ripping of MOH buyers with their “Early BF3 beta Access” Scam.
    3.Fucked Up EA dedicated Servers.
4.Not knowing when to shut the fuck up and let the game proves its better.
5.*Gets so mad forgets what rest of list.*

I agree. EA GO F*CK YOURSELF CAUSE I HATE YOU SINCE I BOUGHT BF2 YOU SONS OF ************* ****************!!!
That f*cking game made me rage so bad. It’s registration and everything… i bought the complete collection then I had to realize that 2 of the DLCs are actually free, I cant install the 3rd one and i paid extra costs for it.
Then their EULA, the rest of the shit you mentioned… now this…
EA = Activision for me, no matter what anybody says.
