One of the most popular aspects of Battlefield 2 was its deep persistence feature, where players earned unlocks and awards as they played, and which could keep them busy for years. This returned in Bad Company 2, however, you could unlock most of the weapons and gadgets in Bad Company 2 in a few dozen hours, something which took DICE by surprise.
For Battlefield 3, DICE always stated that they were going with a much deeper persistence feature, with many more unlocks and a revamped unlock structure for weapons and attachments. Now DICE’s Alan Kertz has unveiled just how long it takes to unlock all the weapons, attachments and gadgets for a class: 100 hours.
The reason it takes so long is because unlocks in Battlefield 3 are given per weapon basis, where each weapon attachment must be unlocked for a specific weapon, meaning that players will be unlocking the same attachments and gadgets over and over again, for each weapon. Most weapons will be given three slots: one for scope, one for barrel, and one under-barrel slot for grips, bipods, grenade launchers, etc.
On one hand, the more you use a weapon, the more and better accessories you get for it, on the other hand, it might get a bit too repetitive unlocking the same thing again and again. But we’ll have to wait and see how the system works when the game ships. Or in the upcoming beta.

BF3 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
So I’m looking at 400 hours to get everything, and then another 400 to hit max level. Woot!
So few hours. Double that and you have some real time-value-ratio. Game’s complete in like what, 3-6 weeks depending on how much social life traded for this. Still, it being closer to BF2 in “time consumed” aspect is better than going “I must have it all and I must have it NOW!” *cough* BC2 *cough*
And apparently your planning on trading your whole social life for this game if your unlocking everything and hitting max level in 4 to 6 weeks.
Congrats, no one likes you?
Yikes. Besides not having a social life, people would need to quit school or their jobs in order to get it done that fast.
Good thing I’m on unemployment
wooo democracy!
Great AOD. Were working and paying taxes so that you can play BF. Woo Democracy
any new footage coming out soon!!! im cracking up watching the same old footage over and over again…!!!! its still fucking awesome looking, so ill continue to watch it untill something new comes out!!! HURRY UP DICE!!!!
theres gonna be a new trailer on the 16th
this game is the worst ive ever seen graphicly i hope modern warfare 3 beats this terrible game. ps:the graphics are worst than mario
^Fail Troll. Come on dude, you cant troll so obviously. Tone it down a bit.
WOW. I feel like i have played Bad Company 2 for longer than the average game life span but i only got 300 hours in it :O Hahaha Battlefield 3 will be one hell of a game to complete.
500 hours or less if you include vehicles
I get excited when I get 24 hours on a game. I guess ill have to step it up o.o….. Like 16.6x up.
the is gonna be awesome!!!
Also, BF3blog you guys should make a real login for the site, a viewcount for articles, a mobile site/app and total thumbs up/down counter. Everything else is perfect.
The thumbs up/down thing needs to definitely be fixed. I’ve had no other problems with this site other than that. Back on topic, I can’t wait to play this non stop, what with all vehicle customizations and weapon progression unlocks, this is ten times more stuff than what MW3 has to bring to the table. Robert Bowling talked about how you can customize your weapon to get less “kick” or less spread, more damage, yaddah yaddah yaddah… but this just blows that out of the water. Even with all the new things that MW3 is implementing into their game, BF3 is just rasing the standards while CoD is still in the nose bleeds. There’s only so much that the CoD Engine can handle, and it has probably almost reached it’s limit. There’s no way that CoD can raise up any further. Their Honda CRX is tuned to the max, while BF3′s Ferrari can still be tweaked to be better, stronger, and faster than ever.
Plus I also love the fact that MW3 is trying to copy BC2′s “Classes” by naming them differently. By the way, here’s a couple of weapons that haven’t been in any other FPS that MW3 is copying:
USAS-12
MP-412 Rex
G3
G36(C)…
Keep this going by posting other things you’ve noticed that MW3 has copied!
You mean the “Assault, Support and Specialist” Strike Packages?
Yeah, those aren’t classes lmfao.
MW3 will have pre-set classes just like every other COD. Most people end up overwriting and renaming them to make their own custom class.
Anyway is it supposed to be good news that it takes that long to unlock eveyrthing? Talk about balancing issues…..a noob whose barely 5 hours into the game will have a really hard time against someone whose played 100+ hours.
the ‘confirmed kills’ game mode was copied from crysis 2.
And the whole ‘point streak’ crap is basically taken from Homefront and MOH(2010)
@m
not really.
someone with iron sights can do just as good against someone with ACOG or Dot sight.
Ya, at long range a 12x sniper scope vs a normal 6x scope is a pretty huge difference. Its not so much about the ACOGvsIron sights, its about the experience of the player. Technically there isnt much of a difference but 9/10 times at even odds the 100h player is going to win.
not really , theres a vid online with some guy talking bout the session he played at pax
he says – the gameplay is build so the better player wins – if ur a noob here then ur really a noob , no blaming it on the size of his gun or the color of his helmet
but only beta can verify all this
breaking glasses , and dog tags
multiplayer trailer count how many times they break a window
@m
Balance issues? You mean the ones mostly solved by matchmaking? It will be a rare occasion when you see someone who’s played for 5 hours playing against someone with 100 hours. That’s the entire reason why matchmaking exists..
@Skillrex
:D) was in FC2 first then in BC2; and G36C was in BF2 and COD4… i dont see why its a copy.
G3, USAS and G36C?
why is that a copy? i mean G3 was in FC2, COD4, BC2; USAS-12 (also known as “U Suck At Shootin, 12 yr old = USAS-12″
other than that, I agree. they simply have no more ideas for the franchise. they try to make it more variable, but they only fail (semi-auto grenade launchers, a few more new overpowered killstreaks, which were mostly copied from homefront and other games, point streak stolen from other FPS series as you said, etc…)
copies…..of guns……in a F.P.S are we all aware of what that stands for. mmmmm so sad rly in a nut shell what your saying is there need not be another f.p.s game ever since all f.p.s share guns and anything new will just be (copies) how can u entertain that idia even for a moment next your gonna say they copied the idia of (peaple) being in the game…… thats my fant done just hope the next racing game doesnt have cars in it that would just be a copy again.
dog tags! they copied that
No game developer decided “such-and-such competing game has such-and-such weapons, and since people think those weapons are cool, we’ll put them in our game so it will boost sales.”
Goldeneye had the M-16, AK-47, UZI, MP-5, RPG-7, etc (although renamed, that’s pretty much what they were). So any FPS that has any of these weapons is copying Goldeneye?
Awesome and then you still have to earn all the awards for each weapon.
When will I have time to play any other games O.o
thats the idea, you ONLY CAN PLAY BF3!!!!
everything sounds good besides the no sex part! you got the “reproduce” part wrong lol
Yeah Literally! Once you put in the disk it releases a fiber glass epoxy into your drive. When you pick up the controller you sweat will react with the controllers new awesomeness and get stuck on. The monitor you play on will become frozen on one screen. You will be stuck were you stand for the rest of time. You will no longer have to use the restroom, eat, reproduce, sleep, breath, or buy another game. Forced to play Battlefield 3 for the rest of eternity…….Hey you know that doesn’t sound half bad
EPIC!
nope
My Troll Motion Sensors are going crazy! ^
bleeeeep bleeeeeeeep bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!
I think it’s going to be more than 100 hours to unlock everything…it depends of which class you play the most. For example, I hardly ever play as recon, it’ll probably take me forever to completely unlock it.
I guess it also depends how good you are. Better players will be able to earn more points, get unlocks faster.
Unless some unlocks are time based, e.g. play Assault for 10 hours to unlock X weapon.
actually will be easy to use recon XD if you don’t like sniping then you don’t have to. if you have a battlelog account you can check up on the weapons used as snipers….they’re more like regular rifles (the semi-autos) and you can walk around w/ iron sights/acog/red dot and plant the radio beacon near enemy lines for some serious destruction ^^ especially w/ one shot kills in the head
This may be overboard. While BC2 was generous, 100 hours per class is tedious. Discourages experimentation. Remember that the longest insignia in BC2 was 5 days of playing in game, 120 hours. Hope it is sped up by launch.
Well, it’s 100 hours to unlock everything for every gun that’s available for that kit. You can also just pick up one gun and not use any other gun for the rest of your life…
Well Believe me when I say that I’m so sad about what I’ll say now.
and they will make a lot of revenue if more of them buy these unlock kits
and OF COURSE they will be HAPPY with the extra money
-EA Will highly likely ask DICE to make kit unlocks available on the online stores so they can generate more revenue from new guys
-For Newbies this would be great so they can get the good weapons VERY EARLY.
-For EA, there will be more new player in BF3
-For us the BF Players, we will have a hard but sweet time trying to teach those newbies that BF is about Team work not Run’n'Gun. Maybe by then they would find out that the weapons they paid extra money for weren’t that useful as they thought it would be
That’s half the fun, isn’t it? earning, really earning, everything you can possibly unlock in-game. Buying, imo, seems like a cop out unless we’re getting exclusives like the B2K package. I’m sure we’ll still have to unlock all the attachments for those weapons anyhow.
You know I completly agree with you as far as teaching noobs the concept of BF3 or any BF game for that matter that it is about TEAM work not RUN N GUN — unfortunatly — each person has their own style of game play and teachin ol dogs new tricks sometimes isnt so easy — see you on the Battlefield! hooahhh!
I disagree with 100 hours being too long. I started a new soldier in BC2 so I could go through the growing pains with a friend that was a late comer. I was surprised to see that I had unlocked all weapons and equipment within 30 hours. I’m now approaching 400 hours between the two soldiers and am 12 C4 kills away from having every award, gold stars in all weapons. I’m looking forward to rewarding those players that stick to a particular weapon / role / vehicle. I think with a game like BF3 people will be playing for years, with 800 hours not being uncommon. I think this looks like a very steep hill for the completionists, but if you have to have all the awards, you going to have to work for them. If you don’t care, you can still use the guns and have a good time… you just won’t have that 12x scope you’re crying for.
Bah, you’re such a noob. I’ve clocked 600/650 hours on BF and I haven’t even unlocked anything yet.
Don’t bother me with calling me a noob. I already know.
I like this idea, it rewards you for the guns you use. Eventually sure everyone will unlock just about everything but for a while when you see a guy with a lot of high level unlocks for a certain gun it shows hes proficient with that gun. I like
If every class has 10 weapons it will be around 10 hours to fully unlock a weapon, not too hard to get in one day
it 10 core attachments, after you hit mastery you get a few more, the more mastery stars you get the more unlocks become available. well atleast untill they decide to be cool and release more weapons with map packs… heres to hoping.
this system with weapon specific unlocks is the biggest crap ever in bf!
class specific would be fine!
I think that’s a little too much. It might discourage experimentation because you’re so focused on unlocking everything with one kit. I thought the BC2 class specific unlock system was OK. I guess we’ll see how it plays out.
I dunno why you’re downvoted so eagerly, but I had the same thought. Unlocking everything for every weapon, again and again? Hmm… we’ll have to wait and see how it works in practice.
I still miss the BF2 system where you got an unlock, and you could chose what to spend it on, what weapon to unlock.
Yeah, the system in BF2 was almost perfect for me, I couldn’t agree with Toshiro more! And I’m downvoted all the time for no reason, I’ve barely seen him downvoted, you should keep track of mine more often! xD lol
Haha, see what I mean?
Geez, these people so eager to downvote you must be a bunch of fat no-lifers on welfare spending their days and nights waiting on any post you make just to downvote you.
not only unlock system was good but also rank progress and points gain was great but ofc they had to “fix it”
“BC2 class specific unlock system was OK.”
No it wasn’t. It was like 3 days after release that you almost had everything unlocked. 400 hours – weapons i don’t like = Sounds good. And good thing is that when you have over ~500 hours played in BF3 you can take a not-so-good-gun and start to unlocking everything you can get to it. That brings that little refreshment you need after those days and days of gameplay.
i think the system was on a good point but needed more because by the time i had all the stuff unlocked i was only level 25 and i.m still not to 50 because it takes so long and i don’t have the time to play 2 weeks strait to do it so i hope they have a better leveling system if bf3.
Yeah, I was like rank 22 when I unlocked everything but im still playing though. now im rank 37 and have all pins and almost every insignias about 4 to go.
Also I have all the trophies you can get in vanilla except “Et tu Brute”
Same here…stopped at 41/42 and have everything except for 30 more M-COM pins. I didn’t enjoy Rush Mode in BC2.
If there are so many unlocks that they come at a fairly frequent bases (every hour or so), then this will be ok. Otherwise it will suck working so hard to get a laser sight on the third gun of that class for 5 hours.
When BF2 started they made leveling way to hard… Maybe we will see the numbers adjusted after the fact for BF3 too.
100 hours? I can do that in one day.
wtf lol
lol monty python
That’s what I’m talking about!
This is the reason I kept playing Battlefield 2 for so long! I really like when you’ve to work hard to earn your stuff, and not just spend a few days, and everything is unlocked.
Great news, thanks.
yep 100% agree with that! the more u work the more satisfaction u get from what u achieved.
exactly and everyone who doesn’t think so is just a little to lazy to admire it. (no offense)
it will take over two weeks continuous gaming.
and a year if you plays an average of one hour every day :0
actually its 16 2/3 days continuous to beat the game and one year 35 days if you play an hour a day.
dont judge me just because im good at math
1 year 34 days if its a leap year
Ridiculously high replay value? Check.
I don’t know how much replay value there is in unlocking the same rifle scope 25 times for 25 different guns.
for one trying some new gun you might not have otherwise and where was the replay on BC2 when you unlocked everything? 1. getting to level 50 and 2. getting platnium on weapons
This game better win best game of the year for all the awesomeness dice has crammed into one blu-ray disk. for those who think that might be a little too long, the unlocks arent based upon total class level, its how much u use a specific weapon. it would take 100 hours to unlock everything in a class, it might only take you 5-10 hours to unlock all the specs on a specific weapon.
BF3blog people, KEEP IT COMING!! Im lovin it!
DICE: (mouth hits floor, drool floods home)
maybe even less if ur very good with that weapon
*runs from Goalies “drool tidal wave”
=0)
(Gets swept in and found a week later, body is buried with BF3 case.)
interesting but I only ever use like 5-6 guns(might end up using way more than that for this game) total so it shouldn’t take too long to get all the attachments I need.
I can haz beta date now???
btw does anyone know what class will be using the smg’s? it would be kinda gay if the engineer could use Carbines AND smg’s while the others are limited to one weapon type. Im hoping they will be ‘all class weapons’ cuz that would really help out recon players who want to get in on some CQC alongside the team if they don’t like being overwatch but still want the gadgets.
I’m pretty sure I saw in the Alpha that the MP7 Submachine gun was available to all the classes, and I’m assuming there will be more submachine guns or assault rifles available to all classes
Wow! I hope you need as much points to rank up as in BF2! I mean right now I need 20 000 points to rank up, and I get 50 points give or take per round. It kept me busy for alot of years…
Kinda like BF2. 100 hours to get the gold awards. 100 hours definitely sounds right for a battlefield game and for anyone who doesn’t like it, they can always go play mw3
Battlefield 3 and skyrim.. my life is over
And right around the time I finally emerge from my game-cave, Mass Effect 3 will be coming out…shit.
Yeah, I’d have to say that Skyrim is the best game, other than BF3, to come out this year. Fuck MW3. ‘Nuff said.
Me gusta! I will work on engineer and support. How ’bout you, guys? Have you made your choices yet?
Engineer and Medic/Assault…those two made/make up most of my playtime in BC2 (Medic not assault).
I’m heading towards Medic or Support. Engineers turned me off in BC2 because of the way people only used the UMP 45 to kill people. That was a major pet peeve of mine. Also, when people run around with LW and SGN UPGR with a USAS-12…
9 People are lvl 50′s who only use UMP’s and USAS-12 because they are douches and can’t be orignial.
My personal favorite is the M1 Garand and the MP-443 Grach in
The UMP-45 is pretty good, but I like the 9A-91, it has a nicer feel and action to it.
Now 24…
Engineer and Recon as usual, but I might dip into the Support class to test out that suppresive fire feature.
ill be working on mostly recon, then assault/engineer, and finally support
Same. I can’t wait to use the Recon UAV plane. Finally a teamwork oriented Recon class.
I’ll be support + C4, it’s fun blowing up stuff
Support and Eng to start, but if it takes a while to get a decent semi-auto as a rush wookie I may skip recon all together. I just cant stand being a bush wookie.
DICE designed the classes so perfectly in BF3, I think I’m just gonna have to play all of them! I’m not much of an assault player, but I love being a medic. I also love providing covering fire, as well as driving tanks and sniping. It looks like I’m gonna have a lot to do in BF3.
I’m going to play all classes equally. Except recon, that will be a bit less for some reason.
Off-topic: are you guys also as disappointed as me when you see there is a new blog item on bf3blog and then you notice it isn’t about the beta? It’s about time to give a clue when he’ll arrive.
I will probably work on the assault class and the support class. only because I like being a teamplayer and ARs and LMGs are tits. I have one inquiry and worry, are weapons going to be faction specific like the M16 for Americans, and AKs for Russians. that how it was in MoH until you reached a certain lvl.
You gormless tosser.
It wont get repetitive! its perfect DICE tear it up!!! i cant wait for this damn game!!!!!
dice is f&%$#** sweet
This is kind of annoying for me. I don’t care about unlocking, I want everything from the beginning >:-D. Usually stick to one of my big multiplayer games for a year (Bad Company 2 and Killzone 2).
Well this looks great. I’ve only had 300 hours of Battlefield Bad Company 2 gameplay (I don’t play video games during school days).
Can’t wait to get super gaming pc. Probably because the one I have is crap.
Only 300 hours…I only have 96 hours…
Neither of you have even scratched the surface of BC2.
no doubt on barely scratching the surface, i have over 700 hours. and still love playing the game.
Dice is getting kinda overboard with this Skinner’s box-technique. (Look it up, I’m too fancy.)
But it’s gonna work on me too.
wow… Uncharted 3, Arkham city, mw3… (I said it)
Busy year
Because you said MW3 (yeah I said “IT”)
Yeah, I guess I deserve thumb downs, cuz I’ve mentioned OTHER GAMES and CONSOLE GAMES and even MW3 Oooohh!!
*sigh*
“Yeah, I guess I deserve thumb downs, cuz I’ve mentioned MW3 Oooohh!!”
Exactly. You deserve even more thumbs down. The hate for MW3 is carved deep into the hearts of the people on this site, so don’t you dare to mention MW3 on this site again.
