Battlefield 3 CommmanderMany (us included) are disappointed by the lack of a Commander feature in Battlefield 3. The Commander was a groundbreaking addition to Battlefield 2, and set the game apart from many other shooters, adding another layer to the gameplay. DICE has previously explained why the Commander feature was removed in Battlefield 3: only one player could play as Commander, and they preferred to “lower the threshold” and allow all players to use assets like the UAV. Ironically, in Bad Company 2, only one player could use the UAV, compared to two Commanders in BF2.

Speaking at the Eurogamer Expo, DICE’s Karl Magnus-Troedsson said that the Commander was a “hot topic” at the studio, with some developers in favor of it and other against. He said:

“When the dev team sat down and thought about this, the Commander role was a very important and hot topic in the studio I have to say. Some people wanted us to implement it in the absolute same way as we had before; some of us wanted us to reinvigorate how we do it.

I don’t know how many people have tried to play as a Commander in Battlefield 2, but it’s kind of a strange experience. Everyone agrees that that actual role of the Commander is very, very cool. But the problem is that only one person per team could play it, and it was always the highest ranking one”

Troedsson made another, more interesting argument against the Commander feature, saying:

“They [Commanders] basically spent the whole match lying on the ground on some obscure corner of the map, hoping not to get knifed in the back and trying to support people”

We disagree with DICE’s reasoning for removing the Commander — Commanders helped the team greatly by providing supplies, by using the UAV, by calling in the artillery, by spotting players. The Commander was never supposed to fight, and in fact, most BF2 players hated a “fighting” Commander. The Commander was basically playing an RTS — a game within a game — and being a Commander was never boring, you had to work hard for your team. Someone was always willing to play the role, and the team with a Commander was far better off then a team without one.

Honestly, we’re still taken aback by DICE occlusion of the Commander feature, and their reasoning behind it.

P.S. Disagree with reasoning too. Too many Leaders = Chaos. One Commander (per team) is all that’s needed.

Far as the whole “sits in a corner, prays nobody finds him and knifes him” thing, they could make it so that the Commander isn’t actually on the Map, they’re somewhere else, and they’re watching from Satellite. While that might add to the “overpowered” aspect of it, problem solved.

Their excuses are rather weak tbh…..

Can’t we substitute arty with mortars and airstrikes? That’s more balanced imo. Bu thopefully mortars wont be like uav, they’ll be a deployable weapon like a tank or something.
EOD bots could replace UAVs, and be placeable by squad leaders.

More like dumbing down you could say even. They could have implemented Commander with a Server Option to Enable/Disable the feature. Clans can very easily find good Commanders. With Randoms its not always so.

With a Server Option you can have it disabled if you go Random and Enabled if you do Clan. Why should Clans pay because a bunch of Randoms decide they can play Commander without even knowing how?

Vote Feature: Players can vote which Commander they want, rather than it Auto-Choosing by Rank, if there’s Multiple people that want to do it.

It can be annoying mid-game though, so maybe don’t let them switch mid-game or something, or optional vote or whatever.

There were some flaws with it, but it was awesome. Really was like having an RPG inside an FPS. Albeit, with different controls etc. but still, awesome.

The game within a game was amazing. I would be very satisfied if they ended up implementing a commander. I thoroughly enjoyed having a commander AND being one. The thing about only 1 per side is that often times people didn’t want to BE the commander but DID want to receive orders from one. Conversely you may not want to be one but sometimes, when the mood is right, being a commander was deeply satisfying.

It was not the highest level player who was the commander. The highest level player who ASK to be … and many high level don’t really like to play commander… so with my ‘middle’ rank, i was very often the commander when i was asking :-)

“They [Commanders] basically spent the whole match lying on the ground on some obscure corner of the map, hoping not to get knifed in the back and trying to support people”

Not sure this is a terribly interesting argument on both sides. Its solution is actually rather simple. In fact people like the ones you described don’t sprout out of the ground – they are made. If you give up and make a game with no depth, you will get players giving up looking for depth.

Same way there are people that have started gaming from the CoD4 era and are so used to the incredible linearity of their campaigns that they get stuck on the see-saw puzzle in HL2 which is what I’d call a linear campaign as well.

Basically the reason why it is removed is because EA doesn’t want to make the majority of existing players feel stupid and out of their comfort zone and so give up on the franchise like spoiled kids.

One of the best matches I’ve ever played in any game was in BF2 when on a public server my team had a commander who knew his shit and multiple full squads that functioned (almost) like they were meant to. Suffice to say we absolutely dominated the game and it could’ve only been better if the other team was as organized as us. It was a rare, immensely enjoyable occasion of a good commander directing a team who trusted his superior perception of the battlefield and thus followed his orders.
Removing the one superior commander with the ability to give orders to different squads will require the squad leaders to communicate with themselves in order to reach that high a level of coordination and quite frankly I don’t see it ever happening. Removing the commander because “not everyone could be him :( ” is the the biggest turd atop DICE’s/EA’s hill of shit decisions that I can guess have only been made in order to appeal to a wider range of gamers (ie. CoD players) at the expense of BF veterans’ preferences.
Ironically enough I’m glad EA chose not to use Steam because otherwise I’d have already pre-ordered the game the moment it would’ve hit Steam and now, looking at the mound of poop DICE is slinging around, I’d regret that decision. I only hope playing the beta will prove me wrong and show me this is actually BF3; not BC3.

to be honest, i really don’t care about the commander feature. RTS games are my favorite, i own total annihilation, Supreme commander, FA, supreme commander 2 (yes i love this type of game as you can consider they are all basically the same thing) and i own almost all total war games, R.U.S.E., Warhammer, commander and conquer, oh and shitty rise of nations (my 2 favorite Total war and supreme commander FA, you cant go wrong). BF2 just didn’t have the RTS feel i liked while i was commander, and unlike in a real RTS people didn’t listen to my Orders :( , and for that reason i really just didn’t like the feeling of commander. i mean really is a US soldier going to say no to the the commander in chief, no they wont, why wont these people treat me with the same respect? i am very good at giving orders, truly i am, you wont see me at the top of Supreme commander or total war leader boards, but by the shear number of RTS games i have played, and my overall experience, if people would have just listened to me more, i would have liked it, and for that matter won a lot more games.

You say that as if you never noticed the UAV, Artillery, Supply Drop and Scan buttons.

Many squad leaders decline orders because it’s an annoying marker on the map and they actually might know what to do better (if the commander is a dumbass), unless they are forced to guide their headless chickens.

Commander never was a helpless “hey, forget everything and capture that point to earn ME points” type of player. He could also see everything on the map (unless obstructed by a roof), spot everything on the map for his team and use super powerful recon abilities of the UAV that uncovered every single enemy (moving or not) in quick sweeps over a circular area.

that i can agree with, they arent suppose to listen to my every orders. what i didnt is when i give an order and this turds go in the other direction, for example, there are 4 guys defending A but there is a massive mob of them coming i would simply just tell other players to go to the A point, well when i only get 2 guys that have listened to me, it kinda pisses me off. i just really didnt like the lack of respect for the commander. and i agree that his tool were helpful, but the few times i did have a team that followed my orders, it was simply devestating, like it should be. i just never really felt like commander was as useful as it could have been.

UAV and Supply drops are much more powerful guidance tools than simple orders that can be declined.

If a squad is retarded, then don’t waste precious resources on them, give UAV and supplies to someone else or if there’s noone else then put it over somewhere you want them to be. Squads are much more eager to move up into an area where there’s no aware unknown enemies. Trust me.

No amount of smart AI programming in RTS will give you as realistic troop and squad behaviour as in BF2. Thats the closest you can have to commanding a real army! if you are really that good at commanding, the veteran players will notices it very early in the game and you can be sure there’ll be players or even squads following your orders to the letter… and if BF3 is joining any tournament games, commander role is one feature that will set it apart from CS etc..audience always love the realtime satellite view of an assult in progress..

Best game ever was when both teams have good team players and commanders,

Commander was fun, but most of the time there were noobs fkning around with it.

Also if you read the eurogamer article it says that squad leaders are sort of like commanders , they can request artyllery strike(hopefully other stuff too)

Commander was like playing an RTS, except people can tell you to fuck off if they wanted to.

Squad Leader is just that, Squad Leader. Totally different.

a good commander could change a round definitly…

And i’m still agree about the fact the hightest ranking one gotta be the commander..

Maybe Dice want BF3 be more like a casual game, a game where each player deserve to be commander knowing lowest rank never ever make me win a round in bf2..

anyway i m agree with your opinion guys..

It amplifies the whole teamwork aspect this way.
You don’t rely one one man, you rely on all of them, to do their thing.

I hated the rank assignment for commander because I got got real high rank commanders that just flat out sucked and some lower ranked ones that were awesome. But we had to mutiny vote out the first guy to get the good commander in. Otherwise the commander role was one that really helped in my decision to leave Blackhawk Down in favor of BF2. Having one person directing different squads to different objectives with a plan in mind really made the whole team-play aspect of the game pop. Anyone who has played BF2 and BC2 can point out the drastic difference in effectiveness this had.

Taking away this feature to make the game more friendly to the noobs was a major failing on the devs part and it will cost the community greatly, as I feel without this feature gameplay will continue more like it has in BC2 than it did in BF2 and 2142. And that just makes me sad, to see the decline in skill needed to play as a trade-off for higher sales just brands sell-out all over DICE.

And oh how I will miss sneaking in to blow up the arty and UAV stations. I loved blinding the enemy commander while my team demolished their bases.

the commander feature was awesome – no other game thats FPS has even try’d to involve something like that.
all they do is add kill streaks from what i can tell.
such a shame to remove something with so much potential in the next gen.
for some unknown reason i always get giddity with a birds eye view of everything going on. its unique.
lets hope those mod tools get dropped and someone does a commander mod.

Wow, Dice’s excuses are SO weak. They must be gearing up for CoD switchovers. Don’t wanna scare them away with intelligent gameplay, i suppose.
