Battlefield 3 squads
Over the past few weeks, a ton of new details have emerged on the squad system in Battlefield 3. On first glance, it appears to share a lot of similarities with Bad Company 2 squads, but there are a number of key changes, including the way members spawn in a squad. Here is the full list of the confirmed and unconfirmed details regarding Battlefield 3 squads.

Confirmed BF3 squad details

  • Squads are limited to 4 members
  • Squad leader can spawn on any member, while members can only spawn on squad leader
  • The creator of the squad is the squad leader, and will be indicated by a star.
  • On 64 player maps, a 32 player team will have 8 squads (8 x 4 = 32)
  • Players will receive squad bonus points for helping the squad, much like in Bad Company 2.
  • Players will receive bonus points for killing the opponent squad leader

Unconfirmed / rumored BF3 squad details

  • The best/most active member will get promoted to squad leader.
  • Squads won’t be lockable (unlike in Bad Company 2)
  • Squad tools (squad leaders get to lock the squad, invite members, kick members, etc.)

Overall, the squad mechanics in BF3 appear to be refined and developed from the ones found in Bad Company 2, which overall worked pretty well. The new spawning structure will limit the amount of spawns and will give the squad leader a greater role to play.

DICE still hasn’t announced all the details regarding squads and multiplayer, but we’d love to see some form of squad management, especially since teams in BF3 will support 32 players and up to 8 squads.

Awesome, another great info roundup from bf3blog!

While i’m surprised that BF3 won’t support more than 4 players per squad, the BC2 system was pretty good, all things considered.

Also, for the love of god, remove the ability to lock squads. There are so many 1 or 2 member squads in BC2 that are locked and forcing others to play solo.

Yes, definitely agree that the squad lock ability should be removed. From experience, the one-person locked squads usually means that someone else will also have to play in a one-person squad until more people join the server, which can be kind of annoying.

Also this isn’t really related to this topic, but please do something to improve parties joining the same server, as often everyone gets split up over the two teams. I’m not sure what could be done about this, but it’s definitely problematic if you go in with a party of two or three and your mates end up on the other team and you’re forced to resort to luck to switch.

Please stop with the 4player squad BS. there are multiple clans that skip your game because of it. Its a huge flaw. if you don’t have more then 3 friends to play with you at any given time sorry.

DICE you are slowly killing me with this BS. You literately lost a PS3 and 360 sale and will only get it on pc for retail price if the PC has more then 4 people squads.

You literately lost almost 1/2 of the GB.com clans and other sites that are less known. Pretty stupid since increasing them would not hurt anyones feelings but leaving them at 4 for the 3rd game in a row really hurts people and forces them to pass bad word about your game and discourage the purchase of it as much as possible. Which is what i will be doing on the competitive websites i visit.

Im also not some hard to please gamer ive gamed for over 25yrs Im very easy and laid back but your killing my favorite shooter.

honestly…. 4 person squads are too small, ffs, 6 isn’t that much bigger, 2 freaking people is not going to make a difference when it comes to clans. The 4 person system is what we got to work with, and if your not willing to play cause there is 2 people less per squad then you got some issues. This is not that big of a deal, yes it was nice to have 6 person squads but look on the bright side, its still possible to have 2 squads running together considering I’m sure that’s what you would be doing in bf2 anyways with a clan. So why are you so upset, it will allow better management of your squad by having 2 fireteams, and it will allow for a tight nit group to work together and much more easily manageable. You can’t keep focusing on the downsides like a lot of people have been doing so far with bf3, too many critics, hell if it were my company developing I would just say “fuck it” stop making the game.

        Devil,

4 person squad are to small. Your also assuming there going to make it so u and 7 friends can join the same team and play together. The close nit thing is a opinion and its yours 6 person squad is only 2 more people but a huge difference. Im sorry if i have been buying there games cuz i love them but never really taking them serious because the 4player squad are bogus and the mic on consoles for all there games except the party chat system in 360 are below avg.

the fact that 4 player teams pisses people off but 6 people team would’t piss anyone off is the point.

You advocate for 4 person teams probably wouldn’t give a crap if it were 6 and that’s my point by sticking to 4 it pisses people off it keeps me and my clan from rolling on this game all night. Sure when only 3 people are on its cool but when there’s more and there needed to kinda choose favorites on who you want over who on your team is BS.

Show me somewhere it says your party of 8 will get into the same room just be in 2 squads and some of my concern will be gone but no BF since console release have had that because they can’t even get the teams right b4 they switch it up and all the sudden your buddies are on a different team now. Im sorry its just a dumb business decision and i would love for you to cancel your game until you understand that not everyone out there is underfriended.

You guys are retarded, 4 member squad is the best option that DICE has. Having 6 member squads would render, the present spawning system overpowered. However reverting to the bf2 spawning system sucks since it rely’s too much on the intelligence of the squad leader and if he was retarded you bascially have to spawn at base.

it liked the squad locking system, it kept noobs off my team, which was me and two friends. locking squads of 1 person should be removed im my opinion tho. it would also be cool if the game auto adjusted the number of squads based on the amount of people on each squad.

The squad lock system is here to stay, there is nothing wrong with it, sometimes 2 ppl lock the squad cause they are in a vehicle together making it easier for other people not to just spawn in on them and take their seat (and yes I’ve seen it happen 1 too freaking many times). The system is fine, and there will be a lot more squads to fill in BF3 rather than enough just for the team, besides a lot of lone wolfs won’t even join a squad so you can count them out.

“…keeps the noobs off…” that´s why the Squadleader will be able to kick / invite people to the squad. I find it rather useless to go in a squad with 2 people, and also to force some players to play alone. Imagine everyone would think “i only make squads with people i know”. Half of the Team wouldnt be able to play/spawn/support the team properly. But yes, if you have some noobs in the Team (and I dont mean new players, i always try to be supportive to those) + the ability to lock your squad but still invite people, is probably the best combination, and only the players could destroy that by staying in 2-player squads. Maybe it would be better to have “unlimited Squads” so nobody has to play alone if to many players decide to be a bit selfish and play with their friends only :> but that´s just my opinion

wat i meant by noobs were the people who just fck around, not people new to the game, those i will also support. but yea, the invite system would be cool, since sometimes we could play with only 3 of us, or other times have someone play with us if we wanted to. i mean two people locked in would get annoying but if they play well, it wouldnt matter.

I think you should be forced to join a squad. In hardcore mode atleast. Just like PR. You get kicked if you dont join a squad or aomething. BF is a game fun to play when you use teamwork. It also is damn effective. DICE’s producer really got me raging when he said “Am I forced to play as a team? No. Am I less of a gamer if I dont play in a squad? No.” this is part of his “play it your way” strategy and I do not agree with it at all. There should at least be a message when you are not in a squad saying “you could have a lot more fun and make a lot more point by joining a squad” or something.

Other then that and the fact that its only 4 players per squad, which means a damn lot of squad, Im fine with this system.

That should be for servers to decide, not DICE. Some servers in previous BF games used to kick people for not joining a squad within 5 minutes of joining the server, I was never a fan of such restrictions.

I’m in a BF community, so I always tend to be in a squad but sometimes on pubs, I might get sick to death of my team being unable to push and so I go solo, try to sneak past the front line and only once I’m safe and clear, will I ask people to join my squad and spawn behind enemy lines.

Sometimes it’s difficult trying to sneak past when you have trigger happy squad members who don’t understand you’re trying to attract as little attention as possible.

This simply means that if you’re a member in a 4-person squad, you can only spawn on the squad leader, not the other two members of the squad. You will likely be able still be able to choose between spawning on the leader or from your base as in the previous games.

Squad-based gameplay are good for teamwork and overall team

If you need more members to joining squad , you can use bonus point and reward to encourage them to join just like a badge, pin or some +100 , +50 pts. for any action for helping teammate

So the lonewolf can play solo (like a Sniper , Recon or Infiltrator but get less point for not joining the squad

I would like to see a similar ability for squad leaders like that of the commander feature in BF2.

Squad leaders should be able to point objectives, rally points, defensive positions, attack positions, and ambush positions. This way your squad/team can be better coordinated. After all, Battlefield is a team game.

I’m gonna be curious to see if squad attack/defend orders come back from Bad Company 2. It’d be kinda cool if only the squad leader could issue attack/defend orders, so even if the squad isn’t communicating by voip, the SL can still take charge and direct the squad.

So basically the squad leader need to be either Rambo or a camping wookie if the squad is to have any chance of staying near the action. The approach they are taking simply doesn’t work when you’re playing with random people (or PUGs in WoW parlance). I for-see lots of running across the map :-(

I don’t think that’s necessarily true. If you get a GOOD squad leader (not gonna comment on the odds of that, we’ll have to wait and see), he can find a safe spot close to the objective with whoever’s still alive, then wait for the rest of the squad to spawn on him. Then once the whole squad’s together you move up and take an objective. It’s not really camping or ramboing. I’ve seen that tactic work a lot on BC2 in Rush.

Agree with the “increase squad size” comments. In real life, a squad isn’t made up of 4 members anyway. It’s made up of 9: 1 Squad leader, 2 Fireteam leaders, and 6 other members, 3 on each fireteam. What Battlefield is talking about is fireteams anyway. It’d be nice to have “squads” that could fit anywhere between 4 and 7 people.

Ad when talking on sykpe or TS3 it’s hard to pinpoint a person we are talking to some times where there is a battle going on in frot of me and a ton of people by me. Just an idea make plays ableto see all squads by organizing them by color or Somthing ad just having enemies in red. Idk just somethig. Haha. BF3 is going to be awesome.

Yes it can be disappointing that this and that are not included and this and that are included but we can pick at this game and be unhappy when it’s released, ruining the fun you want to have, or you can be glad that it’s coming and making the best of it for the best experience, I can’t see clans on PC having any issues, as for the 360 and PS3 I guess you will just have to work something out.

Why does uping the squads affect you? How does it balance the game that a 8 person team would mess up. Is it because of DICE/EA shitty ps3 coding they do where you get switched sides your mics don’t work and you barely get into a game together for the first 2 months.

Dice will never surpass COD on anything but hype the way they structure there game so restrictive. Dice get over your self like Zipper should and stop telling your fans what you think is better and listen to what is better. Zipper is a basically bottom barrel company now with its preaching of HEY WE KNOW BETTER THEN YOU LET US KEEP CHANGING THINGS AND TELLING YOU WE KNOW WHATS BEST.

just because you made a successful game a couple of them doesn’t mean you always know what people want.l have fun being in 2nd place again and forever until you realize what people really like about the COD party system. THATS NOT BEING regulated to mini partys 4 is not a party its a small gathering. I have played your games since 1942 on all consoles and after BC1 party system and BC2 i have never played BF game so little.

Stop dreaming about fireteams and stuff like rifleman has that field of fire and the light machine gunner gives suppresive fire while 2nd rifleman moves to that section of the wall and the team leader is checking that corner… i know players too well, all they want is getting their kills and points= they’ll all split up and work on their own and will ocasionally revive another dude and stuff cuz it brings up points. Why do people have to be so selfish? if we actually manage to play as a fireteam and play tactical (like smoke grenade, then light machine gunner gives covering fire while rest of the team falls back…) the game would be so much better. unfortunatly they’re all cod like players.( yeah 360 no scope and i knifed 5 one after another… i’m on fire!)

Either way thats just the reason you play COD for undetailed unrealistic “IMPRESSION” of warfare where you only have to put 4 letters in front of your name and your in a clan.
DICE have made it 4 men as there is only 4 different classes, therefore each person has there own demographic … one to heal, one to load everyone up, one for AT/AH/AFW and one for scoping out to lay supressive fire on the oppo. teams movement.
This game wasnt created for the look and shoot platform most ppl rely on to be “good” at bfbc2…This is for those who appreciate a fps and want to utilise it to the point where the only thing to beat it would be to joing up the services … I have spent many many hours on this game deafeating all you lookandshooters and still cant really find much to fault it on other than the 2 minute campaign, but who cares about henry blackburn when you have a MMOFPS this detailed to get lost in. 6 man squads were a thing of the past so noob’s had a chance to get into some squads and earn some serious points and xp. Youve had enough practice now, if you want a true test then BF3 is for you, otherwise carry one with the crackerjack COD!
