BF3 SoldierWhile DICE has been showing off Battlefield 3 to the press at GDC, and seemingly impressing everyone, most of the demos were centered on the single player portion of the game, however, some interesting bits of news regarding multiplayer were released. We’ve round up everything we know about the multiplayer portion of BF3 — everything that’s confirmed.

Confirmed

  • Players: 64 players on PC, 24 players on Xbox 360/PS3.
  • No Commander. Commander feature won’t be included, as DICE will focus on “lowering the threshold” for players.
  • 4 classes, just like in Bad Company 2. DICE feels this is the sweet spot for the game.
  • Battlefield 2 maps, several BF2 maps will return in a DLC called “Back to Karkand”. The maps are: Strike at Karkand, Gulf of Oman, Wake Island and Sharqi Peninsula.
  • New squad features. DICE plans to take the squad system to the next level, offering new features. According to the Game Informer interview, DICE says, “We have some really cool things that we’ll show later when it comes to dictating how you play with friends“.
  • Weapons and unlocks. BF3 will have more weapons and unlocks than in Bad Company 2, which itself had the most weapons and unlocks of any Battlefield game to date.
  • Deeper persistence, rankings. One of the issues with Bad Company 2 was that most of the weapons were unlocked before reaching half of the ranks. Says DICE in the GI interview, “we’re also making sure that there is a reason for you to reach the top rank. It doesn’t just end. There will be a lot of focus on persistence and how we present stuff to the player.”
  • Jets will return, so far only the US F18 and Russian Mig 29 have been spotted in various trailers.
  • Prone will return, DICE will counter prone will killcam, bullet traces and other ways in order to balance the gameplay.
  • Killcam will be back and it will be a feature that can be turned on/off on server to server basis.
  • DICE will have more focus on post-release content (DLC)
  • Co-op for the single player campaign
  • No mod tools at release.

Unconfirmed, but likely

  • In-game movie recording is technically possible, but DICE is looking into how to incorporate it into the final product.
  • 3 war-theaters: New York, Paris, Tehran, although it is unsure whether this is for the singleplayer campaign, multiplayer, or both.

32 players for consoles ? Thought it was 24. I almost wish it stays 24, so console players would buy the PC version…

Hopefully DICE doesn’t make it to unrealistic because they’ve been working on the game so hard to make it amazing/great graphics and a bunch of new features unlockables ect… that’s what i’m afraid of

Hey blog, I have a PC that is not ready for this type of game. It would be really informative for you guys to maybe have a write up on the recommendation of hardware, components and maybe a preferred controller? I do have a PS3 and a 360 but I feel and its obvious that the game is focused on PC.

For controller, try mouse and keyboard, otherwise you will be repeatedly owned (there is no auto-aim on the PC).

I can’t wait. I do have an aging system with an intel q9400 quad core and just 4 gigs of ddr2 ram and crossfireed hd4850′s but I can play bc2 on max settings….not as good as when I owned my hd6870 before it fried but I am definatly going to beef up my system to play this game. For any pc owner you will be happy with any hi quality quad core processor..at least 4 gigs of ram and spend your money on a good graphics card. Im going to get the best ati card for under $300 I can buy buy when this game is released. I also own a ps3 and own bc2 on both although I tend to play more on ps3 than pc. I do think they should have 360 controller support and implement a ps3 controller driver…that would be great. 64 players will be crazy and pc graphics with dx11 will make this game shine.
Make sure your gfx card has at least 1gb of ram. The new cards are coming out with at least 2gigs of gddr5…that will be the sweet spot so you can play this game maxed at 1080p…consoles will most likely be stuck at 720 which honestly I can’t tell a difference on my 32″ or 42″ tv’s.

I want to say to the developers though that if you want this game to shine and be better than any other game…you need to let us make maps and mod. People are still playing bf2 and 2142 in the modding community. That is what makes us pc players different than consoles…a pc can do more. LETS KEEP IT THAT WAY

I wish that they will include bigger maps in BF3 and include more
players in the ps3 and x-box consoles and,classes,weapons…..and i would like to add one more thing….In the vehicles,tanks..It would be better if there was a mine launcher around all side of the tanks,Because when the infantry get close to the vehicle,The players tend to panic and go crazy to find the enemy around the tank and kill him…ofcourse it would be too late until he finds and kills the enemy..adding the upgrade will allow the mine launcher to fire mines in the air and instantly explode around the tank and killing any enemy that is close to the tank without dealing damage to the players tank…Im sure that the players of Battlefield 3 would be very excited and happy to this new upgrade and so will i….Thank you..By:Majid Alrawai..

I’m new to Battlefield. My question is on factions. I choose the U.S. Marines will I stay that faction no matter what game mode I pick to play? Or will it be random before a match starts? Also do we stick with our faction till the top rank?

    @Tony

All I can say is that wait. Wait till you know the minimum system requirements. Wait till it’s closer to release date, because by then everything would be a bit cheaper.
For now, just make sure you have enough money to upgrade or buy a new PC when the game comes out.
    There’s no hurry.

hi again if you check this link the developer said they are looking into dedicated servers for consoles which would mean more than 24 players for consoles but he is not allowed to talk about it yet http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/Feature/250640,battlefield-3-interview—256-players-please.aspx
so you can’t always believe what you read on one developers twitter i guess we will just have to wait till the official announcement after the beta

I miss the spec ops class from BF2…

    Assault
    Medic
Sniper/Recon (limit it to 10% of the team, so one per 10 players)
    Spec Ops
    Engineer

Oh yeah, and no commander is ridiculous IMO.

    Seriously Dice…is it that difficult?

Why limit the sniper to a specific amount? If you are one of the people who get in game and cry because your team is losing due to the majority of players being snipers then did you ever stop to think that if the team is nothing but snipers and they are losing they would probably get owned with a different class just as easily. If you have an entire team of snipers, if they are any good 1 or 2 people running around would be able to capture points easily with plenty of cover fire.

Really, what the hell are these people thinking putting tracers back into the game. As long as they give you the option to turn each feature off as desired I have no problem. But I for one would be playing on the Hardcore servers, where you die easy, cant be seen easy, nor have some stupid f’n instant replay to help the crappy gamers out there who cry when they get owned by an unknown enemy. Leave the kill cam to Call of duty where people want to just sprint around and pew pew.

well i agree with erik lundin. maybe not as many as 40 players but 32 would be a good even count for multiplayer. and i think the consoles could handle that easy. plus just look at the latest maps on BC2 like Harvest day and Heavy Metal. Heavy metal esp. That map is amazing! But dead boring unless it’s constantly full (24 players). Maybe some maps could have 32, and some 24 (for the smaller maps similar to such as cold war on BC2). I am just really looking forward to this game so much, let’s hope they don’t give us an amazing game but mess it up with bad glitches (Like the knifing on BC2) =)
